HAPPY

This kind of photograph always makes me happy. In this instance, it has a nighttime party feel, and seems very celebratory. The patterns made by the light make it feel very present and three-dimensional in the space. The colors are also very summery and immediately make me happy. It is a very action-oriented picture, and the lighting adds to the action in a way that makes it very enticing.

Lighting Observation #12

1.) Thursday Mar. 10 2011, 2:45 P.M. Outside the Student Cetner.

2.) The bleak light through the clouds.

3.) Thankfully I’m in a great mood today, or the lighting outside would depress the hell out of me. Walking back to my room this afternoon, I realized that the light was completely dispersed by the clouds, and since it was to early for any kind of artificial lights to be on, there was an empty feeling in the air because of the total lack of visible light source. It was just kind of a grey glow that I associate with depression and sadness. The all-0ver, unfocused nature of the light made everything look flatter since there was no really visible natural modeling. The whole campus felt bleak.

Lighting Observation #11

1.) Wednesday Mar. 9th 2011, 2:50 A.M. My dorm room.

2.) TV light on the wall.

3.) I fell asleep with CNN on and woke up in the middle of the night. My back was toward the TV, but as it was the only source of light in the room, I could see the flashing of the TV set distinctly on the wall I was facing. Because of the rapid way new programs are cut, it was a lot like waking up to a bluish strobe light. It made me feel uncomfortable, like I was a little crazy and possibly hallucinating. The color was very foreboding.

2.) Happy

3.) I love the golden quality of the light in this photo, that golden light that comes through after rain is probably my absolute favorite light ever! It’s so beautiful and happy! The sun is shining and the grass is green with new life  and the rainbow dips in gently adding to the vibrant colors of this happy, quaint and peaceful scene.

Photo Observation: Happy

Theme:  Happy

Description:  I found the light in this photograph happy, even though the girl in it looks unhappy.  The light seems to be shining in on her and giving her a new path.  The light looks like it should give hope.  It illuminates the stairs so they look fresh and white, instead of grey and sad.  The light seems to suggest new beginnings, and I think that is a happy thing.

Lighting Observation 2, Week 6

When/ Where:  My dorm room, 12:30am

Objective:  Light from microwave falling on wall in tiny squares.

Subjective:  Though I’ve used my microwave many times, I usually don’t use it in the dark.  I was surprised to see the light fall on the wall in such a clear, clean way.  The light was made up of tiny boxes and looked warm but unnatural.  I think the unnatural element was largely because the light was a perfect parallelogram on the wall.  I can’t look at my microwave the same way anymore.

Lighting Observation 1, Week 6

When/ Where:  Tyler’s bedroom, 3pm.

Objective:  Sunlight coming through window, visible because of cigarette smoke.

Subjective:  The light appeared thick, almost like you could hold on to it.  It was a slow, calm, lazy light that reminded me of a bright summer morning.  The light put a smile on my face.  It made the room look like a painting.

Lighting Observation 2 (Week 6)

1) Wednesday March 9, around midnight, outside Student Center

2) The light from the Hofstra Clock and other lamps through mist

3) As I was walking back from the Student Center last night I noticed the bright face of the ever present Hofstra clock. The white clock face was lit up but also blurry because of the rainy mist and light fog in the night sky. With the clock in focus, I could just notice the various other lamp posts and streetlights across campus. These were far away and blurry also, giving them an appearance similar to stars. The whole scene created a cold mysterious feeling with the mist hitting my face and covering everything. It seemed like everything was slightly out of focus because the light was passing through the fog and water in the air. The scene was unnerving and all the lights seemed bleak and dim in the night.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 6)

1) Tuesday, March 8, 5pm, walking towards the NAB between Lowe and Memorial

2) A setting sun through trees and and a colorful horizon

3) As I was walking to the NAB between Lowe and Memorial, I noticed a bright orange sky low on the horizon. I was looking through the stone archway between the buildings and this created a sort of picture frame. As I kept looking, I noticed that the above the orange sky was a low blue gray cloud spanning the horizon. This created an interesting layered effect on the horizon. To the left of this, the sun was just over the corner of another building (the one next to Weed Hall) and was very bright shining through the the branches of a tree. The tree was moving around in the wind making the sun appear to shimmer in the evening light. The fact that the horizon was such an interesting combination of colors and the sun was still fairly high in the sky created an odd sort of light but it was also bright and happy. It was a unique combination of light and color and created an uplifting feeling.

Photo Observation, week 6

This image is from a site called Wallpaperbase.com, which, as the name might suggest, is a sight providing wallpaper for the computer.

So, happy theme.

Winter is a happy time – why? The shadows in this are how I know anything about the lighting – there’s nothing particularly special about the spots that aren’t shadowed over. Nonetheless, the juxtaposition of shadow to non-shadow highlights the snow. Somehow, I am more aware of the fact that the snow is totally undisturbed than I would be if the image were all in shadow or evenly lit. The effect is not solely responsible for the happy feeling of the photo, but largely facilitates it. It is rather that idea of undisturbed snow on a winter morning that is happy, and the lighting amplifies the image of undisturbed snow.
