Lighting Observation

March 10th, Charlotte Convention Center Session on Turkish Puppetry, 5:45 PM.

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Turkish puppetry is done by shining a light against a canvas and then pressing different puppets against the canvas to create shadows. The puppets are made out of specially treated translucient calf hide, and are dyed using (usually) natural dyes.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It is hard to belive that the intense colors created against this canvas are actually dyed on to pieces of the same thing that leather is made out of. The colors are incredibly vibrant, and the light play between shadows and sharp objects creates an atmosphere that is very whimsical, and feels traditional as well.

Lighting Observation

March 10th, 11PM, Outside Charlotte Convention Center

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There is a light shining against a wall. The light is in a pool of water, and the wall is up against the water. Due to the falling water nearby, the water is moving, which is causing the light to shimmer against the wall.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The shimmering light has an almost ethereal quality. Because it is a reflection of the water against the wall, it looks almost like the opposite of water: shimmering in the same way but white, not blue, and holding no weight.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/10 around 11:30 PM, looking out on Hamilton street from the NAB second floor lobby.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It is a very windy night, and so it is extremely clear, but wet as it has rained all day. The trees are swaying violently outside, and their color is almost pitch black.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The trees seem so foreboding and angry with the violent jerks they are making in the wind. The streetlights all the way out to the busy road. The orange lights of the streetlights fall in pools on the wet ground, making the ground glow while the sky is dark against it.
