Light Observation 8B

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/22/11; 6:00PM; West side of Hofstra Hall

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Shadows from trees next to Davison broken up on Hofstra Hall siding.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The bright sun shone through the tall trees.  The light went beyond the leaves of the trees and onto Hofstra Hall.  The leafy breakup on the building felt very airy and very natural.  It is very interesting because there are gobos very similar to this look that are often used throughout many designs.

Light Observation 8A

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/23/11; 8:45AM; Outside Student Center

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Dark shadows reflected in puddles in the rain.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The dark and rainy day continued to bring puddles to campus.  Every puddle had dark shadows from the trees and buildings around.  The dark shadows reflected in the water felt very depressing because the shadows added to the “black hole” of the puddle.

Photo Observation 8

THEME: Power

DESCRIPTION: This hotel, Burj Al Arab, is one the main features on the Dubai skyline.  Its shape references the shape of a billowing sail, which in itself lends to the “power” connotation.  The uplighting in this picture shows the sheer mass of the building.  Although it is not the tallest building in Dubai, it most definitely feels powerful because of the reflections of the light off the giant sail and the reflection of the glass.

3) Power

4) When I think power and light , I always think of lightning. To me power is something that is intense, and catches your attention, raw and transforming. To me that is what lightning is as well. Especially in this photo, the lighting is intense, bright, eye catching, raw and transforming. It’s not something you would want to be caught in. Also, with the vibrant purple shooting out of the lightning you can feel the power it had over the area.

Lighting Observation 2: Week 8

1) 3/24/11, 9:13pm, Jones Beach

2) Objective: Driving down Meadowbrook Pkwy with the lighthouse light shining infront of me.

3) Subjective: Nighttime drive down the Meadowbrook with city lights reflecting off the water creating beautiful light on each side of me. With bright streetlights guiding my way down the road. Infront of me is a bright light shining in the distance blinking and catching my eye.

Lighting Observation 1- Week 8

1) 3/23/11, 9:02am, parking lot infront of the student center

2) Objective: The headlights on a car in rainy and cloudy weather about 1ft away.

3) Subjective: Bright fluorescent lights shining and gleaming in the distance. Getting closer and closer and brighter and brighter. shining bright into eyes and then only shining on my legs.

2nd Light Observation Week 8

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 03/23/11 Walk way near Lowe

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:  Sun reflecting in a puddle

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I walked around the usually disgusting puddle that is in the middle of the walk way near bits and bytes I noticed the suns beams reflecting of the surface water. It gave the usually muddy greenish water a special quality. It appeared to be glittering and glowing. Like an oasis in the middle of a desert.

1st Light Observation Week 8

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 03/22/11 Area outside of the library

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Streetlamps in the mist

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I was walking back from rehearsal I notices how there was a light mist around the campus. The usually strong yellow streetlamp appeared soft, white and ghostly. The feel was eeire and the lighting could have easily been on a boat dock by the sea somewhere.

Light Observation

1) 3/25/11- 4:30pm- Dempster Studio A

2) A “Baby Junior was shinning on the Cameras’ Matte Box Creating an old fashioned look.

3)  I was taking part in a film shoot and as we were setting up the lights one of the “Baby Juniors partially shown onto the Matte box of the Camera.  This camera being an ARRI SR1 which is a 16mm camera, can give you the feel of old fashioned movies.  The light gave an old fahioned look to things.  Such as when the lights’ intensity was on the Matte Box but the rest of the camera body was still light.
