THEME: Sunrises/Sunsets

DESCRIPTION: There are a seemingly infinite number of pictures of sunsets and sunrises, over beaches, mountains, beautiful meadows, and architecture. While they certainly are beautiful, and they fit the theme perfectly, none of them really appealed to me. I couldn’t find anything interesting to say about them, because they didn’t say anything to me. After all, a photograph is a photograph. They can only capture so much, and they serve best as reminders instead of an experience. I’ve never seen an extraordinarily beautiful sunset over the coast, but I have seen what my hometown has to offer. I appreciate that this picture doesn’t focus on the sun itself, but serves more as a color palate for a sunset that is much like a typical summer sunset in Waddington, New York. Rarely are there startling pinks or oranges. The soft, watercolor-like blend of pinks, purples, and blues is a pleasant backdrop for unloading the last of the hay from the wagon or going for ice cream with friends. More than anything, this picture takes me back to the many occasions that I found myself in the field or the back lawn, or maybe unloading hay or driving home, seeing the pleasant wash of color overtake the sky before the sometimes blinding darkness set in.
