Light Observation #5

1) Wednesday Feb 26th, 2014 right outside CVStarr.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Leaving my Finance class, I looked at the large clock tower and there was a very large yellow circled that glowed in the center of the face of the clock.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The clock tower outside CVStarr is impossible to miss when leaving the building. This perfectly round, yellow glow looked as if someone had drawn a sun on the face of the clock. However, as I moved toward the clock, the yellow circle raised up and up on the surface, appearing as the rising sun. This felt entirely wrong since it was frigid and dismal outside the moment I saw this. Even though it did not emulate the happiest of feelings, namely because I was confused by the weather contradiction, this light did draw me in towards it. It looked like a firefly could have been trapped in that clock, or I was a moth drawn towards a mysterious, ambiguous light.

3. “Light can be gentle, dangerous, dreamlike, bare, living, dead, misty, clear, hot, dark, violet, springlike, falling, straight, sensual, limited, poisonous, calm and soft.” -Sven Nykvist.

4. To me, this picture was perfect because it personified so many of the adjectives mentioned above. It’s dreamlike, misty, dead, dangerous and gentle, poisonous, calm and soft all at the same time. The way the light is lightly diffused with a blue tint over the image gives it a simultaneously calming and gentle feel, but the highlighting also brings with it a sense of danger and foreboding. The slow and stalking income of the mist pushing in from the left reminds me of a lioness stalking her prey before the attack. The soft but illuminating light upon the hand is full of life, but also full of hesitancy of this eerily calm fog.

3)  Misty

4)  The lighting in this photo displays a misty pathway.  At the top of the photo the colors are more vibrant than anywhere else in the photo.  Towards the middle of the photo you can see the mist entering the picture.  The mist then mutes the color of the photo.  Also there are rays of light entering the picture hitting the barks on the trees.  However, the mist is dispersing the light and it is not hitting the trees in a streak of light making its way through the tree tops.

Journal Entry 5

1) Scorpion Hookah Lounge, 2/25/14, 10:33 PM

2) Objective Description: Colored lights poking through the smokey atmosphere

3) Subjective Description: I exhaled. All around me, smoke twisted and weaved through the air. Looking up, I saw bright red lights coming through the smoke, like the eyes of an evil creature. The smoke caught the beam, causing the light to spread around the room, like ruby slivers in the room. Behind the red light, blacklight peeked through, illuminating the white tapestry that hung from the ceiling, making them look like they were glowing. I sucked in again, soaking in my surroundings, and enjoying the dance of the smoke under the colored lights.

3) Dreamlike, Calm

4) I trudged down the pier, my feet felt like sandbags. The clouds streamed in around my head, making the scene feel like I was approaching the judgment day. The water below me reflected the dark night sky, and I could see shapes moving beneath the water. I could only imagine what lay below the surface of the water- creatures from the darkest corners of my mind. I walked down the pier further, passing the dimly lit benches. Through the clouds, the waning daylight peeked through, reminding that soon, all would be dark and still. I continued on to the end of the pier, where my nightmares awaited in the house at the end. The boathouse, hidden in shadow, was my final destination. Then, I woke up.

3) Violet, Dreamlike

4) The “World of Color” Show was the most touching lighting experience I ever had. It is what inspired me to want to be a lighting designer. The way the light illuminated the water while casting a shadow over the crowed was a truly magical experience. The sky was a perfect black canvas for the beautiful illuminations. With the beautiful ferris wheel illuminated and Mickey’s smiling face cast almost as a watermark across the whole show, the feeling of magic and never left the performance.

Lighting Moment #4

1.  Thursday, 2/20, 12:15 PM, Portsmouth House, Colonial Square

2.  Sunlight reflecting off of snow and pavement

3.  When I stepped outside of my doom this afternoon, I was greeted by a glorious and warm sun. It bounced off the snow and buildings around me, even on bits of grass peaking out near the edges of pavement. The sun’s white light was energizing and rejuvenating, full of life and happiness. It washed away any uncertainty from my mind and filled me with hope, if only for a moment.

Lonely

This photo gives me a weird empty feeling in my stomach, the way only a lonely photo could. The lighting in one corner from the rising sun offers promise of a beautiful day, but the thing about the photo that really sticks out is the dim, foggy bridge on the left hand side. Though it seems at first look that there could be a lovely day ahead, the sole person walking along the bridge in the mist probably can’t even see it. The city around him is steely cold, and the vastness that stretches out from his feet give the feeling of immense solitude.

3) Lonely

4) The sky is softly lit with a dark patch of clouds seemingly making its way in on the left. It looks as if darkness is taking over this picture. The light reflected off the water seems as if its aimed towards the chair, table and flower to emphasize the loneliness with a dark shadow surrounding the circular area of light, making the chair and table feel trapped.

Lighting Observation #4

1. February 18th, 11:30-12:00 at night on Portion Road.

2. This light is a bunch of bright headlights rushing by the left side of me. In front of me are red, some-what circular brake lights. These lights shined during a pitch black night.

3. As I drive home from a long day of work, I noticed the blaring, but beautiful headlights that rush past me on a dark night. They start off as a small twinkle in the distance, but as the cars on the other side rush by, they become two big white lights, creating a streak of brightness that lasts for a mere second. In front of me are two glowing red lights that flicker on and off. These brilliant lights were all around me as they illuminated the rest of my way home.
