Light Observation #4

1) February 20th, 2014 in Breslin Hall at about 3 PM

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was sitting in classroom 209 where the lights were off when I stared at the door and saw the light from the hall seep into our class. This light reflected in the tile on the floor

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Seeing this light reflected in the floor tile gave me hope. We were watching a clip of the play “The Brig” which was giving me anxiety due to it’s subject matter. So when I peered away to catch my breath, this reflection drew me in. Not only was it hopeful that the anxiety was going to end because there was “a light at the end of the tunnel” so to speak, but the reflection itself highlighted the cyclical nature of school and a course of the day; I know I will be back in that classroom at the same time, in the same seat, every Tuesday and Thursday, potentially looking at this square of light again. To me, that is somewhat reassuring. This rhombus on the floor seemed like a sign to enjoy the structure of life now and accept the light that is to come.

Photo Observation #4

3) Lonely

4) This image embodies loneliness to me due to the isolation of the man and vast openness of the surrounding environment. Because the person is so far away, the dock gives perspective, and the horizon is extremely broad; there is an overwhelming feeling of isolation, with which I associate loneliness. Also, being at the end of the long dock, all that is before the person is deep water; water provides a vast amount of the unknown, which also evokes loneliness. The fact that this image is black and white gives a subdued and almost hopeless sensation/vibe, especially since the black and whiteness colors the fact that this man could be jumping into the water to drown himself. This picture pulls me in, but with a negative connotation since I’m immediately drawn to the man standing alone. Though this picture expresses loneliness, I also think it’s beautiful in it’s sadness.
