Lighting Observation

1. Outside Spiegel theater, Wednesday 4/9/14, 11:24

2. Objective description: A sunny day

3. Subjective description: The sun was almost at its highest point of the day. There were lovely shadows created by the trees that gave the sidewalk an excellent texture. I distinctly remember thinking that one shadow of a tree would make a perfect gobo.

3. Bete Noir

4. An empty alleyway at night is something that I’m sure everyone hates. When looking at this photo it makes me kind of edgy because I feel the need to look around and make sure that no one is hiding and waiting to mug me. Also the sickly amber light is not helping at all. It’s coming from high angles and is reflecting off of what seems to be the wet pavement.

3. Bête Noire

4. A sunrise is one of the most spectacular things a person can lay eyes on. However, as I’m waking up this is the last thing I want to see. As my eyes got adjusted to the pitch blackness from sleeping, I become startled when a radiant beam of yellow and white blind me with a great ray of intensity. As it peeks out the window it fills my room with blaring reds, oranges, yellows and whites that tells me it’s time to wake up. Ironically enough, this beautiful spectacle of light is something I could never look forward to seeing.

1) My dorm room, 8:25 AM, Thursday April 10th, 2014

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Light was streaming through the blinds on the windows.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was lying on the floor, about to do the morning crunches that Anna Watts told me would benefit my health. Still groggy, I looked up. What was before me was a square of crystals plastered on my wall. The fresh morning sun pulsated against my window, which were still covered by the blinds. The slit in the blinds, however, mixed with the branches from the trees outside, created a gobo of fantastical qualities. Each panel held a sparkling, bright diamond of light. I finished my crunches, and went outside to explore this new day before me.

3) Bete Noire

4) What kinds of implications come with a sewer? Cold, wet, slimy, dark. The thought of being stuck underground in one of these creates a feeling of uncomfortableness in me. This image beautifully describes what I find as bete noire. The lighting in this image is especially unsettling, as the harsh fluorescents illuminate the green slime and filth on the wall. There is also a hint of unfeeling yellows and browns that make the stomach churn. The fact that the fluorescents illuminate the tunnel in its entirety, stretching for what seems forever, especially highlights the feeling of grossness in this image.

Lighting Observation #10

1. 4/7/14 at around 7:00 at Take-One Theatres.

2. A big spectacle of colored spotlights on a stage moving to a beat.

3. In the musical “West Side Story” the big show stopper is the song and dance number “Mambo”. It should always be done big. In my production, almost every dancer gets their own large, shining spotlight each with a color coordinating with their pose and costume. The first spotlight hits a dancer with a saturated red, emphasizing her intense movements. A light, pale blue spotlight shines on an other couple as they dance slowly and seductively. Behind them is a dancer using big and open dance moves as a sharp, green light shines down on him. It is these precise lights that make the dance number look amazing.

2) Blue Sky

3) That’s it, there is no fancy explanation to my lighting moment this week, it was just a beautiful intense blue sky and it’s simplicity is what makes it so special. Like a good old friend you haven’t seen in a while and you haven’t realized how much you missed him until you saw him again. God, I love spring!!

3) Bête Noire

4) Bête noire represents something that is dislike by people, that’s why I chose smoke. Smoke is something that causes fear to most people, it is associated with feeling of fire and suffocation. Although the theme of this picture is something so toxic I still think it is absolutely beautiful.

Light Observation

1. April 8th, 4:30pm

2. I was walking home from physics and it was sunny. I actually had to squint.

3. I don’t know if the light was so beautiful because it feels like forever since there has been direct sunlight, or if it was because I was out of physics class, or if the sun was really just that lovely. It was euphoric. Everything about my surroundings emanated joy. The sun was bright and yellow- enough to make you squint but not quite bright enough that you needed sunglasses. It was the perfect light. Everything was clear and looked just that much happier basking in the glow of the miracle that is the world.

3. Bête noire: A person or thing strongly detested or avoided

4. This picture accounts for the subject mostly. Adolf Hitler is a person strongly detested for all of his actions in the second World War and the Holocaust and every horrendous deed ever done. But something that is often avoided is the fact that he was a person. I don’t want to defend Hitler. He was a terrible person. But he wasn’t all evil. History avoids the fact that he was nice to (German) children and gentle with animals because we want to see him as a completely evil being – because what sort of human can commit the monstrosities he did? The lighting plays on this, because it is evenly lit by the bright sun. The sun resembles happiness, and bright, even lighting is reminiscent of comedy shows – none of which we want to associate with Adolf Hitler. It just makes the shot that much more hateful.
