Beware – things are not always as they appear…
Photo by Harold Ross, found here.
Surreal.
Searching for surreal lighting, or lighting that evokes some kind of un-reality or dream-reality, as opposed to simply finding a surrealist painting proved quite challenging…the white light highlighting the sides of the trees contrasts the pitch black background, while the shadows of the trees fall forward into the viewer’s space creates a haunting world in which things are not always as they appear. Light seems to emanate from below to illuminate the underside of the leaves & branches, and yet also appears to come from above as wide swaths of the grass surrounding the trees are also illuminated. I imagine this image in something like a Tim Burton film, or maybe in Alice in Wonderland (using colored lights). It also would work quite well in moments of The Devil and Daniel Webster.

Theme: Surreal
Derived: Online
Description: When I first heard the theme was Surreal I thought of what was the most wackiest things I have ever seen and as a fellow tuba player I fell in love with this photo when I first saw it. Surreal is this odd combination of bending the laws of reality and fantasy, logic and imagination. I also thought a surreal image would be one that’ll first catch your glance, and the longer you stare at it, it raises more questions which in turn keeps you glued for even longer. Yet, perhaps the most wacky fact is, that the photo actually makes sense O.o
There’s no hope, all light is consumed
Date: 4/28/16 Time: 7 pm Location: Walmart
Objective: The small slither of sunlight attempting to escape the impending doom of the clouds.
Subjective: Earlier today as I was going back and forth over Hempstead trying to get my phone/sim unlocked, after the man from MetroPCS directed me purchase the sim at Walmart my roommate and I headed straight there. When we got out however I noticed the clouds were looming and got significantly darker. As I turned towards the left I noticed this hole in the sky where the sunlight was trying it’s best not to be consumed, but yet it inevitably failed and rain soon started to poor. After failing and travelling for 3 hours, it was quite a crushing sight. I then walked into Walmart with the looming overcast and felt I was stocking up for some apocalypse.
Light Observation
Date: 4/28/16 Time: 11:00 Location: Campus
Objective Description: As I was walking home from rehearsal for “Company”, i couldn’t help but notice the lighting of the campus as I slowly walked to my room.
Subjective Description: When I got out of rehearsal, I immediately realized how nice the weather was. Then i couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the campus looked lit by the tall lamps. Especially the path right off of Spiegel between the trees. It felt like a nice nature walk. The lamps created mini pools of light as you walked down the path which made it a safer environment.

Description: This photo plays with the silhouettes of the actors during the scene. The two men are both present but you can only really see the shadow of the man in the doorway while there is moonlight beaming down on the other guy. This stuck out to me because of the beautiful colors that are created.
