Lighting observation

  1.  Sunday night, next to Hofstra Hall
  2.  A light shines up illuminating only the front face of Hofstra Hall.
  3. The sharp light illuminated the front face of the building sharpening every edge. The old house is lit up at night like a flag pole, like it is demanding our respect. It seemed so noble and humble at the same time contradicting itself, all together so very Hofstra.

2. Mysterious

3.  To me there is nothing more mysterious than being told not to do something. These signs block access to the Aokigahara forest at the base of mount Fuji, also known as the forest of death. That can’t be known by just looking at this photo thought this sign is cutting off entry to what looks like a lovely forest. Beyond the ropes the sun shines through the trees making whats beyond look innocent, even if it isn’t.

Lighting Observation 4

  1. 2/19/17, 7:05, Top of the Rock
  2. At the top of Rockefeller Center, you can look out and see all of Manhattan and beyond lit up. You can see everything from Times Square to the Empire State Building to the Chrysler Building. All of the lights are different colors, some are white, some have a yellowish tint, and some are brightly colored.
  3. As I stood at the very top of Rockefeller Center, I looked out and saw everything. I felt like I was standing on the top of the world, watching everything pass by. When you look north, you can see a large dark space with what look like strings of white lights going across it, contrasting the bright, completely lit up places of the rest of the city. It seemed so much more peaceful. As I stared, I realized that the dark space was Central Park, and I was thankful that there was such a large green space where you could go to escape the bright lights and bustle of the city.

  2. Mysterious
  3. To me, the most mysterious things in the world is space, especially since NASA’s announcement (ALIENS???). I love this picture because it is one of the most vivid pictures of the stars that I have ever seen. It almost appears as thought night doesn’t exist there because it is so bright. I also love the mysterious red glow of the tents in the foreground that add another level of mystery. This picture was taken at Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania, which my roommate and I are planning to visit on our road trip this spring break, and it is considered one of the best places to see stars in the world.

Lighting Observation

  1. February 23rd, 2017; 7:54am; Bill of Rights Hall 13th Floor
  2. The sunlit morning fog blanketing the air.
  3. I woke up around 6am and looked outside; I thought it was pouring rain the fog was so heavy.  When I woke up again at 7:30, I then thought it was snowing (I also did not have my glasses on). As I was sitting in front of my window getting ready, I found the way the light was cutting through the fog to be so interesting.  It was completely opaque; I couldn’t see anything through it.  But the light made the density of the fog strikingly clear; if the sterile, white noise “feeling” of a hospital room could be visualized, this is what it would look like.  Fittingly, it felt very mysterious, just like our theme of the week.

Masking Myself

Source: Me, taken by Mike Cicchetti through Cicchetti Multi-Media around the Lawrence T. Hubert School of Communication building, posted on November 28, 2016

Theme: Mysterious

Description: One out of 11 photos I did, this was taken late in the afternoon outside with a single light used on my face. Besides the white Bauta mask, the only thing that is seen is my hair and my eyes. What am I think when I look into the lens, right at Mike the photographer? Do I want to hurt him? Am I holding back my anger? Is it just the camera angle that makes me look threatening? That is something that I am interested in revealing with acting. To me, acting is taking off the mask, while in real life you are forced to keep it on.

Lighting Observation

  1. 2/21/17, 6:54, Times Square
  2. Walking through Times Square, I can see a wide variety of neon signs hanging off of the buildings around me. The light coming from the signs is being reflected onto the glass windows of the surrounding buildings.
  3. As I pass through the bustling crowd of Times Square, I look up and notice the neon signs that decorate almost every building around me. These signs glow red, green, yellow, and a multitude of other colors. As I turn my head to take in all of the architecture around me, I realize that the glowing light coming from the signs is being reflected onto several buildings around them. The array of colored light bouncing off of the buildings brought life to what would have otherwise been a dark and dull cityscape.

3. Mysterious

4. The lighting in this photo, or lack thereof, gives a mysterious feeling to the photo. A specific image comes into my mind when I hear the word “mysterious”. It is the image of a room lit only by a single light, leaving the rest of the contents of the room unrevealed. The unknown in this photo is what I think gives the photo a mysterious feeling. The only light in the room is coming from the door. This light is minimal and partially blocked by the person standing in the door. The back lighting on the person turns them into a shadowy figure instead of lighting their features. This photo fits the theme of mystery because of the small sliver of lighting in the room leaves the rooms content and the person standing in the doorway a mystery.

  2. Theme: Mysterious
  3. When I think of mysterious I think of shadows, concealment, and secrets; a mystery is unknown, what’s being kept hidden.  This picture embodies the theme for me because of the how the lighting causes the shadows to fall on the ground and off of the walls; it feels foreboding and as if there is more there than meets the eye.  The darkness is compelling, and the single light source illuminates only so much, telling the viewer that there’s more there than meets the eye, but you have to solve the mystery to find out what more there is.

Lighting Observation 3

2/15/2017 8:00 PM Outside the Netherlands

It was dark out and the lamps outside the Netherlands cast light on the ground in strips, rather than fully coloring the ground.  Underneath each light, there were strips of dark and light surrounding the pole of the light.

Though it was night, there were several suns painted on the floor along with my walk home.  Their rays lit the walkway and the path was transformed from the dreary cold night to my own personal suns.  Torn between suns and yellow daisies the image of the night became rather cheerful regardless of the black sky.
