Virtual Light Lab Project

I chose my inspiration picture as it has an interesting contrast of the orange and the purple.  It has the feeling of Fall in that it has romantic warm colors, and the way the woman is lit is similar to the background but with less harsh warms and a light cool to make her look more real.  The lighting has a richer version of purple than the inspiration as it better exemplifies the rich feeling of Fall.

Springtime is a very romantic time of year, so the colors I found in this image of a Spring sunrise on Long Island fit that idea perfectly.  The subtle pink melding in the bluish sky gives off an impression of warmth that isn’t overpowering.  The sweetness of the lighting evokes the romantic time of springtime along with the bright energy of the emerging morning.

A hot summer day in New England means there are no clouds in the sky and everything is too bright.  The harshness of the day is reflected in the far too bright sky, and the lighting itself makes you want to be wearing sunglasses.

An afternoon in the Winter of Alaska consists of a dark blue sky with an orange tint of the sun reflecting off the land.  It’s almost a sunset but the sun doesn’t alter the sky yet and simply adds a glow to the land.

Fall Sunset in Hawaii

  • Backdrop Colors: G990 @ Full, G345 @ 75%, G133 @ 50%
    • AP7630 backlight 50% intensity:  37 degree elevation angle, 56 degree back angle, stage right of model

  • AP7250 backlight 50% intensity: 37 degree elevation angle, 56 degree back angle, stage left of model
  • AP7400 front light 50% intensity: 54 degree elevation, 75% intensity

I chose this inspiration because when I think of Hawaii I think of bright colors and a warm sun, and this image captures exactly that. The purple and the orange are colors you don’t generally see together, however in a sunset they become increasingly more beautiful and compliment each other wonderfully.

  • AP2790 sidelight 75% intensity: -23 degree elevation angle, stage right of model

I chose this picture as my inspiration because no matter what time of year it is, sunrise is always the coolest part of the day. The sun just peeking over the water in contrast with the cool blue sky gives it just a little bit of a chilly feeling, but the sunlight is sort of warm and has a home-y feel to it.

I chose this photo because summer to me is clear skies and boat rides, and New England is the perfect place to do that. This picture captures the essence of summer in a perfect way. You can tell that its warm, but also breezy. Its very relaxing.

I chose this picture because Alaska’s afternoons especially in winter, can be very dark. So even though this photo was taken in the afternoon, it looks like its a few mere hours away from dusk. It makes the air feel cold and frigid, unwelcoming almost, and yet it seems to be very playful and enjoyable with how the sun’s rays bounce off the snow.

For a Fall Hawaii sunset, I created a romantic scene, with the sky light up in pinks and purples. The couple dancing is primarily light by backlight and sidelight in the same colors as the backdrop to create a silhouette effect.

To create the illusion of a peaceful sunrise, I used white, yellow, light pink, and light orange light coming from stage right and illuminating the front part of the model’s body. I also lit the back part of her body with dark blue light, creating depth and highlighting the colors used on the backdrop. Because the sun would hypothetically be low in the sky, I did not use any light above her head.

I chose a hazy, snowy sky as the sun is beginning to set for the afternoon, so I lit the backdrop with a very light gray/green/blue to establish a dark, dismal mood. I chose the model that had two people in a position that seemed to me to imply tension to further accentuate this. I lit them very dimly, with similar blue and green colors from all directions and added a gobo to create the look of shadows from falling snow.

  1. Fall Sunset in Hawaii

I chose this picture and the lights I did because I really like the purples and dark reds, and oranges that are made up in the sunset in Hawaii. I’ve never gotten to experience a sunset that has purple or creates purple and it really made me want to be right there.
