Single Source Photo Observation

Theme: Single Source Artificial Light

Description: Looking for an image of a single source artificial light reminded me of when I used to to do still life studies, most often with fruit. In this image, the apple is being lit from directly above.

2) I found this photo at this site http://www.google.com/imgres?q=single+light+source&start=184&num=10&um=1&hl=en&biw=1366&bih=667&addh=104&tbm=isch&tbnid=r9xf3xBBR7am9M:&imgrefurl=http://drawsketch.about.com/od/learntodraw/tp/Things-To-Draw.htm&docid=QBRf8GHoVhMpHM&imgurl=http://0.tqn.com/d/drawsketch/1/0/X/b/draw-apple.jpg&w=555&h=437&ei=XhBQT-LjM-zh0wHqtq32DQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=845&vpy=284&dur=343&hovh=199&hovw=253&tx=125&ty=113&sig=112732361351925082313&sqi=2&page=8&tbnh=149&tbnw=200&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:15,s:184

3) Single Light Source

4) This photo of an apple shows how beautiful food can become shown from a single light source. With the water droplets on top of the apple, the piece of fruit looks even more appetizing. The hot spot of the light is reflected off the surface of the apple showing the different colors of this beautiful food.

Beja Light Observation:

Date, Time, Location: Thursday March 3rd , 2011; 10PM, at Applebee’s in Baldwin

Objective Description: the restaurant was lit by lightly dim sealing lights, as well as altering colored neon lights above most of the tables.

Subjective Description: As I was eating I noticed the lighting generally was very dull and not intense. Above my seat was a bright blue chandelier style light hovering over the table. This spotlight light was giving some extra needed light. It was also interesting that the blue light above us was just as intense as the sealing lights.

MODELING

The first thing I thought of with regard to light modeling was still life painting, so I found the photo equivalent. The reflection of the key light source is visible on the skin of the apple, and the shadow on the right side makes it look very round. The shadow cast on the white surface and the shadow of the leaf on the apple also add to the three-dimensional effect. I imagine it wouldn’t look as tasty without the modeling.
