I automatically thought of yellows and pinks when I saw the word sunset so I found a picture of what the actual sunset in Vermont looks like and went off of that. The lighting is bright in the back but softer in the front which I think resembles a sunset quite well.

I picked these colors to reflect those in the picture. I tried to make the bottom of the picture be darker than the top to show the  action of a sunrise with the majority of the light coming from the upper right side of the photo.

With this picture I purposefully lit the cyc to show the contrast between sand and sky to get that beach feeling. I also included many shades of yellow to simulate sunshine and placed a lot of the light directly on the model’s face because bright summer days are usually sunny all over.

My version of this picture relfects the photo for two main reasons. One is the direct backlight coming from behind the model to show similarity to the sunlight coming from behind the lighthouse. The second is the fade of blue down to white on the sides of the model showing the cold, dry feeling that is obtained by the picture.

 

 

Lighting Observation #5: Sand on the walls of Breslin

22 Feb. 2016 – 1:19pm – 2nd story Breslin Hall

The sun shines through a dirty window and also appears to reflect off of the bricks on the exterior of the building some. This shines a textured and patterned light on the interior wall and some grey doors of Breslin Hall. On the slightly peach-colored, off-white wall, the light looks cream, and, on the grey doors, the light looks light greenish with some blue in it.

The lighting is rough and intriguing. It displays a gobo-like pattern on an ordinary surrounding; thus, making the setting endowed with a theatrical magic. No longer are the objects just a wall and some doors; they are gritty like sand and mysterious like ocean waves with splashes of whitish foam and deeper colors. The lighting harkens to the beach with its reflected greenish and cream colors. The wall and doors are foreign objects in a bland classroom building setting with this lighting softly expanding across it. A breath filled with the smell of the ocean and dampness of water can be felt and imagined through this lighting. The lighting is transporting, alluring to the eye, and soothing with its gentle contrast between the light and shapes created by its false gobo.

Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

Coney Island, baby!

AMUSEMENT

I’m a big fan of Coney Island. An amusement park is such an obvious choice for the theme. The lighting is bright and colorful and designed precisely to imbue joy, wonder and “amusement”. What I like about this composite photograph is combining the night time cacophony of color with the singular bright sunlight of the day which highlights the beach goers. A bright sunny day on the beach also imbues the possibility of “amusement”.

4. It is the crack of dawn on a desolate beach, and the sun has begun to light up the deep blue sky.  Shining over the horizon, rays of red, orange and yellow cast down upon the hot sand.  The beaming sun shines down on two lush trees creating long, dark shadows along the ground. The silhouettes of the trees lie on the seemingly blue sand that hasn’t been fully illuminated by the sun’s inviting rays.  The golden light can fool anybody into thinking they are in a dream.

3) Theme: Night Life

4) This picture fits the theme of nightlife perfectly because you can see all of the different sizes of the buildings that are lit up around this beach. The lights on the building are reflecting on the ocean. You can see the edge of the sand and all of the small details on the beach such as the palm trees. You can see in the background the shadows of a mountain in the background of this photo. Seeing the lights up on this beach reminds me of people dancing and partying in the resorts. The ocean has a greenish/dark blue color that is from the reflection of the lights. It also looks foggy in the areas of the ocean that are lit up.

Photo Observation

I took this picture of a sunset over the summer. I was struck by the way the light pierced through the clouds making it look as though the sky was on fire. Yet the clouds directly in front of the sun are still in shadow, a siloutte in the forground, lending dimension to the image. The light was reflecting on the tops of the water only, creating depth to the shadows and motion of the waves. The colors of the sunset reflect in the wet sand, which looked as smooth as glass and glowed orange along the beach, reminding me of a  watercolor painting.
