Light Observation #10

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: April 12th, 9:20pm, Dorm room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The tv is paused on a blue screen and the lights are off.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The only light in the room is the blue from the screen and street lights peeking through the blinds. There’s an eerie feel about the room. I’m afraid to leave the bed for fear of monsters underneath it. The lights from outside awash the room in shadows. It is time to continue the show and forget what lurks outside. Laughter is the best cure to fight the darkness.

Photo Observation #10

Taken from:

I chose this because when I think of summer I think of the beach and sunsets and no cares. I think this photo really summarizes that all up. I really like the sun is the main focus. I really like how it’s the only light source and how its changing the color of everything. It makes the sky and the water orangey. It has a very calm feeling about the whole picture and I really like that about it.

Lighting Observation #9

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: April 6th, 7:40pm, Playhouse

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The stage is lit up with lights, as well as the house.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Lights surround everyone else, but I am in the dark, watching it all. Watching it all unfold. It is peaceful, the lights are not too bright and yet I can still see. They are dim enough to allow for peacefulness but bright enough that I know where to look. I don’t pay attention to anything surrounding me. Right now I just take a breath and breathe in the lights. Letting the peace engulf me.

  2. Surreal
  3. I chose this photo because I think it really demonstrates surrealism. Things that contradict the conscious mind. Its the connection between dream like and conscious. To me this photo perfectly demonstrates that. I also enjoy the colors used in the photo because its such a contrast between this guy with his body open and the landscape behind him.

Lighting Observation #6

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: March 6th, 11am, Breslin

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The room is lit up by the fluorescents, except for one corner of the classroom where the lights are out.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Brightness. Painful brightness from the glow of the fluorescents. They’re like a needle for the eye with the pain they cause. But there is one glimmer of peace. The corner, the lights no longer shine. I take comfort in looking at that corner. It is a sight for sore eyes. I concentrate on the darkness and try to block out the shrill glow from all of the other lights. I can’t wait to return to the natural light that awaits outside.

Theme: Happy

This photo makes me think of happiness because flowers bring that to many people. This flower in particular just looks like its a happy flower. Its blooming and reaching for the outdoors. The natural light in this photo really brings out the color of the flower and I really like that. It also allows all of the focus to be on the flower and doesn’t distract from that.

Lighting Observation #5

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Feb 25th, 11pm, Hotel in Jersey

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Everyone else is asleep, I’m trying to get to sleep and the only light in the room is coming from underneath the door until someone else’s phone lights up.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: One strip of light. One. Everything around is peaceful, quiet, as if the world is telling me to go to sleep. Just one light cast upon me, watching over, protecting. I begin to fall into a slumber when suddenly my eyes snap open. The balance in the room has been shaken. A bright glow comes from the floor, it seems to fill the whole room. One little electronic can light up an entire room. How odd. It doesn’t go away immediately, it remains lit, creating harsh shadows all around until finally it dies. And with that I allow sleep to overtake me.

Theme: Shadows

I picked this photo because when I think about shadows my mind immediately jumps to shadow puppets. I really like the whole idea of shadow puppets especially ones where you can do them yourself with your hands. I like this photo because it shows the light source that is causing the shadow to be formed. I also really like that you can see all of what is causing the shadow. The shadow surrounded in so much light with little bits of light peeking through where the eyes are is just so satisfying to me.

Lighting Observation #4

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Feb 21st, 12am, my room.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: One of my roommates has her desk light on across the room.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Darkness…almost. One sliver of bright to keep me awake. As I try to drift off I can sense the light from across the room. It bounces from wall to wall crawling up trying to bathe the entire room in light. I’d like to snuff out that light. It’s orange glow keeps me awake as I try my hardest to relax and sleep. Any other time this light would be welcome, would be relaxing but right now there’s only one word for it: annoying.

3. Mysterious

4. When I think of mysterious I tend to think of things that are darker with shadows and trees. I like this picture for those reasons. Its not quite symmetrical which makes my brain confused which adds to the mysteriousness of the picture. I also like how it takes a minute of looking to realize that there are signs and a light on the street. You can’t really see where the trees end or where the road goes which also helps lend itself to the mysteriousness.
