Lighting Observation #8

Date, Time, Location: 4/4/19 at around 10:30pm in my dorm room

Objective Description: When I walked into my room, my roommates were watching something on Netflix while they had a candle burning. The light from the television was not very bright compared to the light from the candle.

Subjective Description: The warmth of the candle made me feel like I was home. The warm light contrasted to the cool light from the television. I felt that the candle represented a kind of homelyness.

Lighting Observation #1

  1. January 30th, 2019 at around 7 pm in my dorm room
  2. Objective Description: On top of my roommate’s desk, she has an essential oil diffuser that also has an led light inside of it. The light can change to different colors, but at the time it was on a mix between amber and orange. The light also flickers to look like a candle. The rest of the room was dark so the essential oil diffuser was the most prominent.
  3. Subjective Description: As a result of the light flickering like a candle, it had reminded me of the fires that my family and I make when it is a cold evening similar to the weather during that time. I felt calm and at home. The light had made me feel calm with all the stress that is occurring with the first week of classes.

Lighting Observation: 3/11

Date: 3/5/2016

Time: 6:30 PM

Location: Bocca Di Bacco Restaurant NYC

Objective Description: The sun was going down, however, the restaurant was completely dark inside as there was only one window towards the front of the restaurant. My family and I were seated in the back and once the sun was completely down, they dimmed the lights and lit each table with candles as the main source of illumination.

Subjective Description: A dark warm, however, warm and inviting. The atmosphere lit with soothing and glowing flickers from the center of each dark, wooden table. The menus barely legible under the dimly lit flourescents hanging overhead. Each person placed on each side of the table laughed with a glow that I had not seen in quite some time. Lit from beneath, each person’s features were eccentuated with shadow and orange glow from the burning flame centered on the table. Quite a contrast from the burning flame illuminating the dark and dingy vaults of Edinurgh, but rather an inviting atmosphere with warmth of joy and company.

Lighting Observation #3

1. February 13 2014 at around 5:30. This was in the den of my house on top of an end table.

2. This light was a little flame from a candle. It emitted a large glow around itself that shone on the wall.

3. As I walked into my dark den, a tiny spark emitted a beautiful, warm glow. The flame danced with grace as it lit the blackened room with relaxing shades of red and orange. Our wall was illuminated with bright waves of yellow as the light around the candle swayed around the room. In contrast to the dark, gloomy night, the candle created a calming and serene atmosphere. Although small, this flame evoked an enormous glow that made a huge difference.

Photo Observation #2: Single Light Source/Shadows

Photo from taheny.com/2006/09/summer-rain-and-candles.htm

Theme: Single Light Source/Shadows

This picture really jumped out at me because the lighting is similar to that of a sunrise, which was our assignment last week. The most intense source of the light is in the center of the picture. It instills a sense of life and soul in the picture for me. When I look at how the light is strong in the center and fills the room slowly dimming at it’s edges, I get a strong sense of strength and presence in the room. It’s an intense spotlight. The strength of the white light, which fades from red to orange and yellow says I am here. I am present and I am strong. I am not going anywhere. At first you assume the light to be isolated because it is only one source. On the contrary, the light from the burning candle, though alone, is extremely strong and doesn’t simply remain as one small flame of light, a single source. The light completely fills the entire room as if it were just as strong as a variety of different light sources.

Photo Observation #12

1)

2) Taken By Nic Christopher. April 3 at approx. 10:30 PM in the “Blue Zone” restaurant in Dingle, Ireland.

3) THEME: #Allofthefeelings

4) DESCRIPTION: This photo was taken one night at dinner on my recent trip to Ireland. On our final stop of many in Ireland we were in the city of Galway. We had been traveling all day and finally got to our hotel at around 11:00 at night. At 11:00 in Ireland other than all of the pubs there are almost no places to find dinner. The three of us ended up at a hipster pizza place with couches, large tables and crystals made into candles. My mom ordered her usual glass of white wine with dinner. When her wine was delivered to the table it was placed between me and the glowing candle in front of me.

I saw a potential for a great moment with my camera. I moved the glass of wine right over the candle flame and watched the flicker of the light through the crystal and then watched the light flood and spread across the yellow wine in the glass. What I loved about this photo is the way that the light diffused and spread across the wine. I also thought it was really cool to see the light enter the glass and be contained within the structure of the glass. The condensation on the edge of the glass offered yet one more very stimulating element to the image as it added concentrated pieces of light scattered all across the smooth and warming colors of the wine and flame combination.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 12)

1) Saturday night at like 8:30 @ church

2) Candlelight

3) I was attending the Easter Vigil this past Saturday. There’s a portion of the mass where all the members hold candles. All the rest of the lights in the church were out and the sparse candles were the only sources. They were a swarm of specks casting a sea of swaying shadows (alliteration is awesome). They created a feeling of inner peace and also of bonding with the small community of candles collected in the congregation. It was a soothing and emotional scene.

Lighting Observation 1, Week 2

Date/ Time/ Location:  February 7, 5:30pm, Tyler’s bedroom

Objective Description:  Shadow of a bottle on a wall, lit by candles.

Subjective Description:  When I saw the shadow, or silhouette, of the bottle on the wall it looked very strong and imposing for a bottle.  The shadow that was cast on the wall made the bottle appear very big in comparison to the “real” objects around it.  The shadow was there because of candle that were placed next to the bottle, which gave the scene a warm and cozy light even though the bottle made everything seem more serious and dominating.
