Lighting Moment

Date/Time/Location: 5/5 Student Rep Dress

Objective Description: The black box is dark and buzzing with pre-show jitters. I’m sitting in my seat waiting to watching my choreography, among many other works. The first piece ends and then a blue light just barely lights the space so that the dancers/crew can quickly remove several boxes from the stage.

Subjective Description: The blue was very ominous and reminded me of a percolating storm. It was interesting because just moments ago the dancers were dancing in a whole different “atmosphere” and now they were just people removed props from the stage. I liked how pedestrian this seemed.

THEME: Wildcard

DESCRIPTION: With my final dance performance coming up this week, I have started to notice all the interesting choices for lighting made by this season’s choreographers. This photo captures the essence of one of the pieces, choreographed by Yoshito. The lack of color in correspondence to the sharp angular light provides a dramatic intensity to the atmosphere. Moreover, I feel as though the rectangular format is similar to that of focusing a lens or zooming in on a picture. While the small frames of light create interesting shapes on the floor, they also focus the audience’s gaze on the dancers’ movement and fade out all the in-between spaces.

Photo Observation #10: Dance Inc. Ad

I got this photo from Jaclyn Marie Photography’s blog. (https://jaclynmariephoto.wordpress.com/design-work/)

The theme is Advertisement Model/Desire.

The lighting is mysterious and makes the picture interesting . The figure is lit to emphasis her fabulous arched back position that is elegant like a bird. The light encourages the viewer to appreciate the dancer’s form with its bright and intense limited use of light. The light calls attention to this dancer like they are the star in the night sky. The lighting only shows certain body parts of the dancer; it is selective in its focus. This select focus makes the star image even greater. “Don’t you want to be a star” the lighting and photo call out to the spectator. Thus, the desire in this advertisement is establish through its lighting of a model.
