Lighting Observation – #7

1. October 23rd at 6:30 at Hauppauge High School’s football field

2. Bight colorful explosions in a pitch black sky.

3. Every year, I attend the homecoming game at my old high school. At the close of the game the sky is illuminated with the most spectacular fireworks display you will ever see. The dark sky explodes into a mural of bright, stunning colors. Vibrant whites, exploding reds, lavish golds, and deep blues stream across the sky and paint the darkness with vivacious hues. The alluring display dazzles me and revives my sense of Hauppauge pride. It is these lively pyrotechnics that will always draw me back to every homecoming game at Hauppauge High School.

3. Inspiring.

4. The world is full of many inspirations, but nothing compares to the twinkling of the night sky.  Most people can spend hours stargazing and making wishes upon the bright, dazzling stars. The stars watch over us at such an incredible height with their white lights cascading over the earth, bringing light to the dark sky. The stars surround the equally beautiful moon that reflects the light from the sun. The moon and the stars are a wonderful contrast to the dark sky by illuminating the night with their intense white light. Their vibrant glow lights the way for us to follow our dreams.

3. Lonely

4. On a dark night, a lone soul walks along a black and empty footpath.  The only light provided is a dull, white light emitted from the street lamps surrounding the dusky pathway. The lampposts do a poor job illuminating this vacant area, giving it an uninviting atmosphere. Silhouettes of trees and bushes rise along the walkway.  This wanderer strolls through a vast area of darkness alone, with nothing but his shadow beside him.

3. Night Life

4. Nothing depicts “Night Life” quite like Time Square. Imagine all of the bustling city-goers, walking on the sidewalk with the multi-colored neon billboards shining on their faces. The welcoming glow of Broadway marquees flash as theatrical spotlights beam towards the sky. Bright yellow taxi headlights zoom up and down the avenue as pedestrians wave them down. Glittering skyscrapers contrast with the black night sky. Ironically, Time Square at night is when this city shines it brightest.

Light Observation 9

1) 3/4/13 6:35 Spiegel Theater

2) Most of the spiegel was in darkness, except for a row of lights lighting up a small strip on the stage.

3) I went to the spiegel to set up for Carrie rehearsal and was greated by darkness. I had never been in there when it was dark so it shocked me a bit. It was dark all around me except for a light on the stage. I didn’t know if anyone was in there and I called out. My heart was racing. I dropped my stuff and ran to the back to turn on all the lights. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the rest of the theater in light. I sat down after and thought how much it reminded me of a textbook cheezy-horror-movie situation.

3) Theme: Dealer’s Choice: Scary

4) When I saw this picture, I immediately thought of my dealer’s choice theme….scary. This picture when I first looked at it, gave me the creeps. The light displays many features in this picture. You can see the different lines of shadow, the big tree and the bench. It reminds me of a rainy night on a field where there is no one around. This location would be perfect if you were using it to film a scary movie. I really like this picture because it immediately expressed to me the feeling of being scared and panicked. I also like the rays of light showing in the air from the huge glaring light in the background.

Lighting Observation 11.2

1) 4/22/12 – 4:16 PM – Black box theater in the NAB

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was in the Black Box with a few people looking at the lighting options for the proscenium. Bryan turned off the lights and there was no light in the space. I handed him my flashlight and he walked around but all I could see was the small white dot floating around in the space.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was meeting Bryan Chess in the Black box to look at the possible options that we had for illuminating the proscenium for Spring Awakening. I walked into the Black Box and sat down in the house and waited for Bryan to show me what he had plaid with already. After I sat down he walked over to the light switch and turned off the lights so that we could turn on the strip lights. When he turned off the lights it was pitch black in the theater and I could not see my hand in front of my face. I hardly knew where Byran was other than what I could hear of him.

Being in this absolute dark fog was somewhat disconcerting as I was all of a sudden completely unaware of anything around me. Bryan tripped and stumbled and then finally made it over by me by following my voice. I handed him my flashlight and he began to walk toward the proscenium. As he wandered around all I could see was the tiny floating light all over the black box. The light seemed to take on the personality of Bryan. It zig zagged back and forth and quickly moved about the room, in the same way bryan acts on a daily basis. Finally he found his way behind the proscenium and as soon as he passed behind the muslin I was able to see a faint image of Bryan’s face appear. The light from the flashlight just touched the muslin and reflected just enough to pick up the contours of Bryan’s face and made him look just like he was floating like the wizards head in The Wizard of Oz.
