Light Observation 5

1.) Hempstead Turnpike, Long Island New York, March 1st, 7pm.

2.) I am in the passenger seat of the car with my friend driving down the street to Trader Joes. It is dark outside and the street lamps are on. While sitting in my seat I can notice the glare on the street lights on the window showing the horizontal marks on the car from when it was hand dried at the car wash last week. The lamps of the street lights are a warmer temp, appearing to be orange almost. On the,  bottom of the car window the lights from the passing car’s headlights make a glare similar to the street  lamps, but their temperature is cooler, appearing creamy yellow.

3.) These lights made me think about life passing by. The lights would come and go one by one, each one a representation of a life time on this planet. While bright and lively, it is only a brief moment. Then it dims off, only for the next light to appear. Over the course of the 20 minuet drive hundreds of lights will have passed by. Each one being erased after its brief moment of existence.

wow, Sounds like something Becket would say, kind of dark.

Photo Observation 6

Photo taken by Me, February 2016

Theme: Shadow

Usually shadows can be found during the day time, where light is more abundant and common. But in our modern world where so much is lit at night time, it is easy to find shadows even in the dark. Shadows have the ability to create more tension at night, given humans are generally afraid of the dark and unknown. The less we can see, the worse.

Lighting Observation 2

  1. February 2nd, 5:16pm, Hempstead
  2. Objective Description: Winter sunsets can have such delicate, softened colors to them. Driving around running errands at sunset has enabled me to have a moment just enjoying the view of a sunset with colors easy on the eyes. I see red and green traffic lights and the silhouettes of buildings as the light leaves the sky. A couple clouds that reflect the colors of the sunset.
  3. Subjective Description: I’m really hungry and the clouds look like cotton candy. But the mood in general is quiet and gentle driving around with a pastel sunset on a Tuesday night.

Light Observation 4

1) February 18th, 2014 on the Hempstead Turnpike around 8:30 PM

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Driving back from the Emergency Room, I noticed the light streaming from a stoplight.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: In my sick state of mind, it seemed to me like my vision was enhanced. The congestion had caused my eyes to become watery, through which all light was heightened. I noticed in particular, one stoplight, with its tricolor, ever changing light. As the light switched from red to green, I noticed the beams of light streaming out from all around the source. The green light pierced through the cold, dead night, like a light crown around the circular lamp. In the background there danced beams of light coming from all of the street lamps, the harsh orange color with which we are all too familiar. The scene was beautifully painted in my mind: the colors of night on a busy highway.

Light Observation #5

1) Thursday March 1st, 2012 – 10:00 pm – Alliance Hall

2) Outside my Window, I peer onto the Hempstead Turnpike where four police cars have gathered their light clashing brightly and quickly.

3)  The Lights strobe in a pattern, red blue, red blue with white in between and it’s weird how to some people, these may look like party lights, but to us, we automatically think police lights which is immediately associated with danger and accidents. Still, it is quite rhythmic and chaotic at the same time, three of the same beat playing at different times.

Light Observation 2/11

1) February 10th, 10 PM on Fairview Blvd.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I am driving down the street and it is very dark, except for the streetlights on the main road about a quarter mile ahead. The street is lined with houses, most of which have their lights off by now. There is a large SUV ahead in the center of the road, with its headlights on, and red and white police lights are casting their strobing lights across the fronts of the houses. There are several other police cars casting lights along the road behind the large SUV blocking the road.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Even with the sound of the traffic on the road, the light gives the impression that one should be dead silent. The neighborhood seems violated, and it seems like trespassing just to live there. The dim yellow in the distance seems welcoming, but the bright white of the LED headlights and the red and white strobes chasing along the facades of the buildings seem to block me from the rest of the world, as if I am forbidden from escaping what feels like imminent danger. It feels as though the whole neighborhood is isolated from the rest of the world and there is no escape.
