Lighting Observation 9 A

1.) Mindnight ish 3/30 or tech 31/11 Street outside my house

2.) Naked tree branches with water droplets on the interestingly modeled by light from a street lamp

3.) After parking my car last night I was walking home and had a lighting moment! There was a tree with no leaves but teeming with small droplets of water, too light to fall but heavy enough to hang a little off the branch. What was really interesting was the angle the streetlamp hit the tree the tips of the branches were glowing which was enhanced by the light being refracted in the water drops. It not only gave the branches dimension, but almost a holy or angelic feel to it because of the mystic glow that backlit it.

Beja Photo Observation:

What, Where:  The Grinch, yea

Theme: Modeling

Description: while I was surfing the net, I came across this picture. In it the Grinch is being lit by one strong light from the left side that seems to catch his every feature. This makes a fade from bright to dark across, still being allowed to see the whole face. It also gives him a weary look combined with the extreme close up.

MODELING

The first thing I thought of with regard to light modeling was still life painting, so I found the photo equivalent. The reflection of the key light source is visible on the skin of the apple, and the shadow on the right side makes it look very round. The shadow cast on the white surface and the shadow of the leaf on the apple also add to the three-dimensional effect. I imagine it wouldn’t look as tasty without the modeling.

I felt this picture was a good example of modeling because of the way the light hits the two pairs of shoes in this photograph.  Though it is not a very brightly lit picture, you can see exactly how each of the shoes curve because and how  they fit to the feet that are in them.  The way the light works with the furthest left leg also indicates how it is shaped.  You can also understand the shape of the small bits of chair legs that can be seen in the corner and between the two pairs of feet because of the side-light in this photograph.

Photo Observation 4

2) I took this photo at a car show.

3) Theme: Modeling

4) I chose this picture for modeling because I really liked how the light shines on the car to show off all of its curves.  I found it interesting how these kinds of events are lit because the light is really bright so that you can see the cars shine in their perfection and beauty.  It seems contradictory because normally you would use lower light to hide imperfection but in this case they are trying to show off all of the fancy curves and overall flow of the cars.  I picked this car in particular because of its numerous amounts of curves and the particular glimmers of light that reflect off the car to expose these individual curves.  When I looked at this picture I immediately thought of how a cylinder is lit and how, like we discussed in class curved surfaces reflect light in a very specific way so that we can identify it is 3D even in a 2D picture.  The other thing I found interesting about this picture is that the hood is a consistent color, white for that matter and the light is really bright. (Minimal shadows)  Despite these factors you can still see that there is dimension to the hood and there are curves within it.  It  seems to me that the highlights of light on the car are making the car seem 3D rather than the shodows.
