Theme: Surreal

Description: This picture depicts a woman standing on top of a mountain after a presumably long hike. The view from the top is what I consider to be surreal in this photo. This, along with the feeling one gets when experiencing this instance.

3) THEME: Inspiring

4) DESCRIPTION: As we came to the top of the this valley, I saw it there before me. There was the peak. I had come this far, so I knew that I couldn’t back down now. Behind the peak, high in the sky, was the mid-afternoon sun. I could feel the individual rays reaching out towards me. I knew that once I got to the top of the peak, I would feel as if I could touch the bright sun above me. The light reflected off of the snow, making it glimmer around me. The sparkles that came from the ground made it look like someone had dropped some diamonds. I kept climbing, with a new hope within me. I would reach the top. I would feel the sky.

3) THEME: Cold

4) DESCRIPTION: Just like the mountain that rises from the background of this photograph, the coldness of this photo overwhelms this image. All around is a dark, sinister blue, giving an uncomfortable feeling to anyone looking at it. The clouds however, reflect the light differently, appearing as a lighter blue than the sky around them. A single beam of white light shines through the clouds, illuminating the treacherous journey ahead. This beam provides a sort of comfort, a hope, that perhaps, behind the coldness of the landscape, maybe there is a shed of warmth.

4) The feeling of being high on a mountain top is pure excitement and awe. I had the chance to climb Mt. Vesuvius in Naples a few years back. We drove up half the mountain to a stopping point. My uncle, his new wife, my dad, my sister, and I got out and started to walk up the winding gravel trail. It was steep and at times it was hard, but being with my family made the entire experience so great and fun. However, nothing could compare to the feeling of finally making it to the top. I walked closer to the edge and looked out over the sea and the horizon, across all of Naples. The sun was high in the sky and being so far up, being able to see so much of the world, it was an overpowering sensation. It was like I had conquered the world.

Theme:  Power

When I think of something powerful, I think of mountains.  I found this picture of a mountain casting a shadow because it expresses the grandness and solidity that is a mountain.  I liked that you could see other mountains and valleys in the distance bathed in light and then the strong triangle of shadow that is the giant mountain.  The shadow looks so rough and imposing in contrast to the soft yellow light on the horizon.

Cold Photo Observation

Source:   tumblr.com

Theme:  Cold

This entire photograph struck me as “cold” as soon as I came across it.  Not only for the obvious reasons that it is of a snow-covered mountain, but also because of the ominous shadows and grey clouds overhead.  Behind the mountain we can barely see another shadowed mountain underneath the clouds.  The harsh angles caused by the sun on the snow and the steep angle of the mountain also add to the frigid quality of this photograph.  This mountain looks scary, uninviting, and almost evil because of the way the sun and shadows relate to each other.
