3) Theme: Night life

4) This photo is  a picture of Times Square around 10pm on a summer night. My mom took this picture on our trip to NY when I was looking for schools to attend for college. The picture itself is full of life from the various colors of all of the lights to the ridiculous amount of people that are shuffling through the streets. This photo fits the theme because it clearly shows nightlife.

Photo Observation: Amusement

This is from one of my first trips to the city. The sheer amount of light and color simultaneously overwhelmed me and filled me with wonder. It’s almost blinding to look at in the photo because all the bright lights are reflecting off all the surfaces. This is a busy and crowded environment that screams entertainment and life. Even if you’re not doing anything in particular, the stimuli alone is enough to amuse. Looking at this picture, it’s easy to imagine how everything on the ground moved even after the snapshot was taken.

Lighting Observation: Subway station at 168th street

4/12/15, 9pm, subway station at 168th street

I was visiting a friend in Washington Heights on Sunday night and I had never gotten off the subway at 168th street. And I hope I never have to again. Without a doubt, the CREEPIEST station I have ever been in, especially on a cool spring night.

The harsh, yellow lights had green tints to them, making the ugly concrete walls even uglier. It was the color that very sick, dying people are painted to be in morbid graphic novels. I had never walked down such a long corridor in a subway station before. The way the lights were positioned and colored made me feel like I was in a movie about a haunted mental institution … and I was the hunted.

LIPS, a drag bar, for my 21st birthday. 2/9/14

To some, the lighting in this photo may spell out “tacky.” But I am a sucker for the cheap, orangey chandelier lighting in the dark room. I had two dream jobs as a child: Scooby Doo villain, and singer in a seedy, smoky bar. I grew out of the former, but still hold the latter very dear to my heart. There is something so comforting to me about the dimly lit room; it heightens the aural senses. (And of course, if I *were* the performer in this case, maybe crooning through a doleful rendition of “Bewitched,” I would be smack dab in the middle of that orange, hazy lighting.  I can hear glasses clinking and friends enjoying tipsy chatter, just from looking at this picture.

Marry The Night

Nightlife

This photo that I found on the web reminds me of (many) a drunken night spent in the city with friends. The slant, of course, creates the uncentered feeling that a few hours of partying will cause on the body. I love how the headlights from the cars make us feel like everything is in motion. Even at 3am, NYC is not sleeping — or even close to being quiet. The warm lights from what looks like a late-night diner are welcoming to many a soul who would regret not eating after the night’s debauchery. And even though it is a subtle addition, the few apartment lights on make me wonder what everyone was up to at this hour. Walking the city streets at night makes me feel larger than life, but something about this picture makes me feel small. Perhaps it is that I know that I will just be another apartment light that is on, or off, to anyone passing by.

Lighting Observation #4

1) Saturday February 18th, 2012 – 4:00 P.m. – Midtown tunnel

2) The lights in the tunnel are fluorescent type lights separated every two feet or so, this makes a cool effect when driving through the tunnel, because it’s wave after wave of orange light.

3) This really was a fascinating moment, I felt as if I was a child getting all giddy about some cool lights making some cool pattern. The effect being produced made me feel like I was a film reel, being noticed frame by frame, The action the car changed as my friends and I danced because these lights worked quite well as party lights, they gave rhythm to the moment, and thats something that is a function of light that is usually forgotten.

Photo Observation #3

Photo taken by Nic Christopher on August 31st at around 3:00 PM

THEME: Shadows

DESCRIPTION: This photo was taken on a relatively clear day in the city right across the street from St Patrick’s cathedral. It was taken as the sun was going down yet still high enough in the sky to cast light down onto the buildings, unobstructed from the buildings surrounding the cathedral. I love this picture because not including the sepia tone, it is entirely untouched in post production. The way the sun cast its light onto the buildings and the fact that statue was completely covered by the shadows provided an illusion of a photo montage even though the composition was untouched.

The intricate patterns and cut outs etched into the side of the cathedral offered a playground for the sun’s rays to cast shadows all over the wall. The intensity of the sunlight emphasized every raised surface on the cathedral. The shadows behind these highlighted portions offer an amazing contrast on the building making it appear 3-D in the flattened image. In the foreground of the image ties the piece all together as the building to the right had cast a shadow over the entirety of the statue. The dark figure placed against the bright background offers a wonderful contrast that makes the viewer seem as if they are right there. When I study the  picture, I can sense the angle of the sun and the approximate placement of all the structures that surrounded me as I snapped this picture. The sun was at a perfect angle that day and at a perfect intensity to capture a moment with a melody of intense lighting accented with soft and harsh shadows to make the image come to life and bring the viewer to 50th and 5th on this august afternoon.

Lighting Observation #3

1) Saturday Feb. 5th 2011, 8:35 P.M. Manhattan.

2) The light at the top of the Empire State Building through the fog.

3) It had been raining all day, and there was a thick fog obscuring the tops of the taller buildings. As I turned onto 34th St. from Madison Ave., I could see the Empire State Building, which seemed to be surrounded by a thick green mist. I was taken aback by the unnatural, spooky feeling of the light. The dispersion of the light in the fog made the range of the lamp itself visible, and it made me feel quite small. It complimented the cold, remote feeling of the weather perfectly. It is one of the more unnerving things I’ve seen lately.
