3. Storm’s Brewing

4. I like the uncertainty of this picture. It’s difficult to tell whether things are just about to get bad, or whether they are finally getting better. To me that’s the key element of the “brewing” of a storm, the uncertainty of just how bad it’s going to get. The light could be breaking through from behind the cloud, staving off the uncertain future, or the cloud could be moving in to block more and more of the sun.

3) Storm’s Brewing

4) I took this photo outside of the main netherlands door on wednesday night. It was humid all day and I had heard that there was supposed to be dry thunderstorms sometime. I was waiting with an umbrella handy in my bag for such an occassion. As I was walking back to my dorm to hopefully settle in and avoid any part of the storm, I looked up and noticed the sky. Most of it was black or dark blue and grey, except for a few pockets of brighter, purer light. After all this time being aware of an imminent storm I had let it creep up on me, and I may have missed it completely. The clear spring sky was fighting a losing battle to hold its ground against the storm, just so I could walk home without getting soaked. Just a few minutes later and I would have been.

3) Theme: Storm’s Brewing

4) When I saw this picture, I immediately thought it was appropriate for this week’s theme. The really like the way the picture is in black and white because looking at it reminds me, that something bad is going to happen and the picture being in black and white creates a dismal feel to the photo. The way the clouds are formed in a circle and the bright light in the middle tells me that it is windy outside and a storm is coming. There is a feeling of scariness and loneliness in this picture. The empty road signifies that everyone has packed up and left in hopes to escape the storm.

3) Storm’s Brewing

4) When I think of a storm brewing, a big storm, I think of caution and preparation. When the storm is brewing, we know it’s coming. We can prepare. So I thought of one of the universal symbols for emergencies and caution: flashing red/orange lights. When you see a light like this, moving or flashing in some manner a bright red, orange, or yellow, you know something bad is coming, if not already there. They are a universal sign of warning that I feel like can tip off anyone that something is amiss if they are flashing.

4) The idea of “a storm’s a brewin'” reminds me of the beginning of the fight, the start of a war. This picture represents the conflict that begins the war- the far away deep red sky and hot, bright sun, the fire of what’s about to happen, but is off in the distance. The darkness of everything that’s been happening has cast dark, hazy shadows, but are nothing in contrast to the violent horizon. The dark, terrible things are only a foreshadowing of the conflict to come.
