Sunset Aesthetic

4. The sunset itself drew feelings reminiscent of a Van Gogh painting. The colors are two that are not typically seen together in artists’ works, but are visually compelling when seen in a sunset. The cumulonimbus clouds have the same aesthetic as the works of Monet and the impressionist era.

4. The positioning of the bird’s nest frames the sun to enhance the sunrise. The colors of the sky caused by the sun combined with the birds making their nest remind me of spring and give the impression of warmth.  The way the plant below and next to the nest appear to be blowing in the wind.  The overall sense of the photo is warmth near the coast.

This photo is a sunrise over Alaska. The mist over the water is mixed with the smoke of a near by forest fire. The plane is going back to the fire, with all the potential of a new day and the beauty of this photo there is a lingering feeling that it is more a continuation of the previous night for the person in the plane.

Fall Sunset in Vermont

I included these different colors because when i think of a sunrise i see a picture of darkness that starts at the top and the colors become to change and become brighter as you look down the cyc. I also took some mental pictures that i have when i saw sunsets in Vermont.

A Spring Sunrise in Montauk

This reminds me of the sunrise because right before the sun comes up there are beautiful shades of red and blue that fill up the sky. In this picture the sun is starting to come up that is why she is lit the way she is. She is lit in all white to show the brightness of the sun.

Noon on a Hot Summer Day in Hawaii

When i think of a hot summer day in Hawaii i immediately go to the beach. I lit my actors like they were at the beach with the backdrop being the sky that is right over the water. There are some turquoise colors that are on the cyc that show how tropical the area is.

Winter Afternoon in Maine

To me, winter in Maine could be very beautiful. There are still blue skies that have some white in it because of the light reflecting off the snow. This man is walking on a very cold day with snow on the ground

I automatically thought of yellows and pinks when I saw the word sunset so I found a picture of what the actual sunset in Vermont looks like and went off of that. The lighting is bright in the back but softer in the front which I think resembles a sunset quite well.

I picked these colors to reflect those in the picture. I tried to make the bottom of the picture be darker than the top to show the  action of a sunrise with the majority of the light coming from the upper right side of the photo.

With this picture I purposefully lit the cyc to show the contrast between sand and sky to get that beach feeling. I also included many shades of yellow to simulate sunshine and placed a lot of the light directly on the model’s face because bright summer days are usually sunny all over.

4. Winter in Maine

My version of this picture relfects the photo for two main reasons. One is the direct backlight coming from behind the model to show similarity to the sunlight coming from behind the lighthouse. The second is the fade of blue down to white on the sides of the model showing the cold, dry feeling that is obtained by the picture.

 

 

Lighting Observation

Date: 3/30 Time: 6:45 Location: Montauk Light House

Objective Description: watched the sunrise on the rocks and witnessed the many colors that come up before and during the sunrise. created a calming and peaceful environment.

Subjective Description: I went to the Montauk Lighthouse where I watched the sunrise. I went with Richie and we woke up at 3 in the morning and left by 4 to get to the lighthouse. The view was beautiful and there were so many colors that lit up the sky. There was a moment where the was a rainbow in the sky and then it suddenly turned back into blue and then the sun finally rose up and it was a moment like the lion king. In that moment all of my worries left my brain and I was so grateful I got to witness such an incredible view that most people don’t usually get to see.

1) March 15th – 7:15 am

2) The sunrise is shining through my window, illuminating my lamp, which was turned on as I woke up before sunrise, and the shadow of the lamp on the wall is interesting because it’s one of those multiple-bulb lamps with only a few bulbs on at a time, so like, some of the shadow is brighter than the other part of it, because it’s a shadow from the sun, but the light of the lamp illuminates it, and also, the light of the lamp is fluorescent white light, whereas the sun is throwing a very yellow/gold hue on the wall.

3) Well what I think is cool subjectively about this is that it’s kind of almost like a section of the wall as it was before the sun rose, being preserved into the daytime. Ignoring the fact that the sunlight is indeed reflecting off of everything and also passing through the translucent parts of my lamp, it’s kind of like a cut section of the wall from an earlier time – cause the sunlight isn’t affecting it, but the lamp light still is, whereas all around it, the sun is bright enough to not be able to see the lamp light at all affecting the wall. So that’s cool. I guess the emotion I’d put there is like, determined, like, the lighting itself from the early morning is determined to preserve itself through the day. Until, well, I turn off my lamp, I guess.

Description: This was taken when a couple friends and I randomly decided to see the sunrise after a long night during finals week last semester. Getting there it was quite windy and chilly but the warmth from the rays, as we looked out to see the wiggles of the sand, and the waves crashing back and forth was simply soothing.

Grand Canyon Sunset – Tia

Description: this photo was taken right at the beginning of sunset over the Grand Canyon on my road trip last summer. It displays the usual colors that one would associate with a sunset; oranges, yellows, and occasional pinks.

Malibu Sunset

This warm gradient reminds me of the sunset of a cool season in a hot place like Malibu. The colors I used are not hot enough to evoke a summertime feeling. I avoided intense reds or oranges and tried to blend softer warm shades. I tried to put the blues of the top and the pinks and oranges of the bottom on the model at different angles to immerse her in the fading sunlight.

Mexico

The lighting I used for this is simple and bright. The blue sky is cloudless like the sky normally is in Mexico. Beachy daylight can be seen around the bottom which reminds me of sand. There are only two lights in the cyc because the colors of summer are generally less dynamic than the colors of fall or spring when the sun is out. I chose to shine a lot of light on the model since the sun is so bright.

New England Winter

I think of dull colors when I think winter in New England. It was challenging to not make the lighting look like death. It still kind of look like death but I was going for an overcast setting, so I used a soft shade of blue and some grays. Downstage of the model is a cream-colored light so that she is illuminated but doesn’t blend into the backdrop and look like a ghost.

This effectively portrays the mood of a Maine sunrise because the pink and blue gradient looks like the sky at dawn and the atmosphere is cool like Maine. The pink is not too warm. It reminds me of a fresh start.
