Journal Entry #1

Tripadvisor

The photo is of a sunset at the beach, describing that days end so others can begin.

The lighting is somewhere in the middle to create the space to see the colors when the sun sets to see the simplicity of it all.

Sunset

1)

2) This is a photo of a sunset taken by Richard F Staples, Jr. and submitted to the “Light: Beyond the Bulb” image collection project by the Chandra X-ray Center at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

3) The photo theme is Sunrise/Sunset.

4) The photo depicts a pink and purple sunset, which Staples Jr. explains is a result of the sun’s distance from Earth. Since the sun is at a specific distance, the light is spread out in such a way that the blue and purple wavelengths of the light spectrum are visible. The colors in the image are also pleasingly symmetrical because of the ocean’s reflection of the sunlight.

Photo Observation

-This photo was taken by me in the middle of a field on Hofstra campus taken September 20th at 6:50pm

-Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

-As the sun sets, a pinkish hue creeps up through the sky. Bleeding into a dainty orange and yellow until finally dispersing into soft blue that will soon become dark night. The colors are gentle yet expansive, creating calmness as the day ends and leading with hope into tomorrow.

Photo Observation #1

I captured this photo on my birthday January 22nd 2019 at 5:45pm in Epcot Disney World.

Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

Description: In context to the location that this photo was taken, this photo captures a moment of calm, simple, “natural” beauty within the active, exciting, and overwhelming world of Epcot. This photo fits this weeks theme, because the sunset lighting perfectly creates a sense of tranquility, hiding the chaos and reality of what is to be in Epcot at 5:45pm.

2) THEME: Sunset/Sunrise

3) DESCRIPTION: It has been nearly impossible to dodge Kobe Bryant tribute content while browsing social media platforms this past week. The now late, great NBA superstar’s passing came as a tragic shock to all who ever witnessed him dominate the basketball court donning that iconic purple and yellow Los Angeles Lakers color combination. In the early evening hours on the day of his passing, the sunset over LA wore those rich colors in his honor. The gradient of the sky and the vibrance of the purple seems ethereal as it sits above the city of Los Angeles like a crown sitting on the head of a deserving king. The colors are hopeful yet comforting as they surround the mourning metropolitan. You may argue that the sun’s setting is capable of creating such a colorful lighting master piece on any given day of the year, however on January 26th there is no doubt in my mind who those electric purple and yellow hues were for.

Photo Observation

1.) Photo was taken by me on November 10th at 4:44pm on the Unispan.

2) Sunset/Sunrise

3) The sky looked as if it was carefully painted in vibrant colors of coral, gold, and lavender above the Nether-span.

Photo Observation 1

Source- I took this photo on my iPhone 5 in August of 2014 while riding the Staten Island ferry.

Theme- Sunset/Sunrise

Description-While the sun is not directly pictured here, its presence remains constant and undeniable. As the sun begins to set, the warm hues it emits highlight the scattered clouds in the distance surrounding the Statue of Liberty. The Statue itself is kept in shadow and the surrounding greenery as well as some of the more distant landmarks become enveloped in darkness as the sun continues to proceed towards its rest. As the sun vanishes from the world, the energy of the day gradually drains away with it. The warm sky contrasting with the dimly lit landmarks brings forth a sense of peace and tranquility as it provides a much welcomed signal of the end of a long day.

3:Sunset on beach
4: The light from the sunset creates a harsh contrast between the front of the body and back. It also causes parts of the face to have slivers of sunlight as well as highlighting eccentricities in the hair. The photo itself gives off a mix of warmth and sadness.

Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

This is a photo I took walking across the unispan on Friday night. The contrast of the natural beauty of the sunset with the synthetic light from the headlights and taillights of the cars zipping by on the turnpike below perfectly highlights the things I love about Hofstra, the combination of natural beauty while being just a hop, skip, and a jump from one of the most bustling cities in the world.

Sunset/Sunrise

Description: This is an image of the sun rising over NYC. The sun has created a warm orange glow in the distances as it begins its journey up to its’ place in the already blue, morning sky. Even though New York City is the city that never sleeps the sun is rising to begin another day. This image fits the theme of sunset/sunrise since it is a clear picture of the sun ascending.
