Photo Observation #8

2. Taken By: Lucas Zimmermann
3. Surreal
4. The lighting in this picture looks like it belongs in a rave or at a really big party. Instead, it is at a cross section seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The way the Light is shining, it seems like they’re stage lights, and they provide the feeling that stakes are high.

Theme: Surreal

Description: While at a glance this image is simple in concept, it’s actually very bizarre the more you stare it. The bulb itself is floating yet lit, and the person being lit by it is covering it and staring at it like a live fire.

Photo Observation #8

Location: Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Room at the Louisiana in Denmark

There is a couple standing in the middle of a room full of lights. The lights vary in color and sizes. I’m not sure how many lights there is exactly, but after reading the photographer’s description, I learned that the couple is standing in a room surrounded by mirrors that multiply the amount of lights to look like millions. I find this picture surreal because it looks as if the couple is standing in the middle of outer space and its them agains the world. It looks as if the universe around them reaches out for what seems like forever.

4) This photo of the Disneyland castle at night, with winter, exemplifies to me surreality because it goes in a way, against the way most people see Disneyland, and especially the castle. Taking the castle and photographing it at night, surrounded by fog with cooler rather than warmer colors goes against how many see the castle and especially with the fog, creates a dreamlike idea in me, and makes me question in a way, “what if” in my mind, seeing the castle in the fog allows me to think about the castle in a different way in part, because the lines are blurred and not as crisp, almost as if they’re fading into the sky.

2) This is a screen capture from the short film LUCID by Tarek Mawad and Friedrich van Schoor (http://www.lucid-art.com/)

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: This light installment in this snowy area creates a surreal feeling. Because of the contrast of the futuristic feeling light from the sleek shape of it and the insane value, with the natural and calm background. This looking very unreal and strange is what creates the surreal atmosphere. Even though it is very surreal, it still feels as if this otherworld makes sense together. The color of the light goes nicely with the color of the sky and mountains, which is what makes it feel put together even in the strangeness.

Surreal

This photo is surreal because of the strange colors and positioning of the light.  The woman is standing in a light surrounded by darkness that reminds me of the deep ocean.  Though she is firmly on land, the way she is positioned in relation to the sea life above her seems to place her below them in deep water.

4-Corner Path Statue

  1. Location: March 6, 2017 at 11:15 near Spiegel Theater
  2. Objective: In the center of a crossroad is a twisted, melted onyx statue. On all 4 corner there are lamp posts that shine around the statue, but not directly onto it.
  3. Subjective: This represents the not only the directions of north, south, east and west, but also the different directions that you take in life. There is never a clear answer, as each road leads to this unformed thing at the center. While there is a grotesqueness about this unknown entity, there is also a beauty about not knowing what is going to happen.

The Eye of Peer Gynt

Surreal light diagram

Source: Me from April 8, 2016 at the New Academics Black Box Theater

Theme: Surreal

Description: This photo is the set from the premiere of Peer Gynt. In the center is an eye-shaped structure that has two spiraling staircases on each side. What this eye represented was the spiral that Peer Gynt’s life is as he both experiences being an outcast and interacting with trolls to being a successful businessman and aging. It goes into the personal infinity of Peer Gynt’s rebelliousness and ambition over personal connection.

  3. I thought this photo was very interesting when i first saw it. I almost get a sense that the man in this photo is walking to heaven. I also really love how the light is shining through the clouds and really gives this picture a magnificent feeling.

  1. This lighting is surreal because it washes the woman in the unnatural colors of cyan and red. The majority of her hair and body is lit up red, making her look suspicious, sexy, and dangerous. The cyan light adds a mysterious, isolating feeling and looks like a cold shiver all the way up the side of her body and on her face. Overall, the lighting leaves the woman’s personality and emotion a mystery, but it certainly makes her seem bold and important.
