Neon Night Lights

Theme: Night Life

I chose this picture because it invited me into a fun story. The intense neon colors, the cracks in the pavement and walls, the steps leading into the dark–all of it screams debauchery and vice. What I see here is a trashy hole-in-the-wall venue that may be fun, scary or both. The picture is taken in such a way that the “WATCH YOUR STEP” is shown, but the actual letters on the sign aren’t. The irony of those words combined with the blur of the sign and the blackness of what’s beneath make this photo feel dangerous, but the myriad of color suggests a fun danger. This is enticing. The lights create a clever color fade effect, as they get colder the farther down you go. I think walking through this would feel like walking from a pink daylight (a time of routine and structure) into a blue night (a time of fun and release).

Max Cerci – Light Observation

1) 2/26/14 After the Symposium in the Playhouse Lobby.

2) The afternoon sun in the courtyard.

3) Walking out of the Playhouse theater and into the lobby a bunch of my friends and I didn’t waste time putting our jackets on as I began to say “It looks beautiful outside!” The second we opened the door a huge gust of freezing cold win hit with ferocity. Several different people began complaining “The light made it look so nice and warm outside!!” I found it interesting how the warmth of the sunlight in the courtyard and reflecting off the pavement immediately convinced us that it was springlike conditions outside even though we had all just been outside about 45 min. ago. This made me think about how easily light can fool our mind with the different psychological effects it has.

Photo Observation #1 – Sunrise Over The City

2. http://jasonkelly.com/2010/09/finance-at-first-light/

3. Sunrise/Sunset

4. As the sun rises at dawn, urban-dwellers wake up early to get where they need to be. As they are on their way, they are greeted with the soothing vibrancy of the sunrise over the city. The warm reds, oranges and yellows shine down on them, giving solace to people about to have a busy day of work. The warm colors give a comforting aura. The sky around the sun glimmers with a faint but breath-taking glow from the sun. The gleaming rays brightens the day of the weary workers.

Photo Observation #10 – Tear in the Sky

James Vernacotola took this picture ( http://jimmyv99.smugmug.com/keyword/james%20vernacotola#!i=788299647&k=WUYJx )

THEME: Dealer’s Choice

Description: What you are looking at is the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour in the distance. It is a beautiful site as the launch reflects in the waterway. It looks as if the shuttle tore open the sky. An open gash, revealing loads of light onto the night sky. The bright warm color of the tear compliments the cool color of the moon so well. The sky is lit so much. The moon, rip, and stars are all brightly filling the sky with its beauty. There is no unknown here, nothing is unseen, yet there is still magnificence that exists that never becomes boring to the human eye. Bright colors and lights will always attract the attention of humans. This draws the eye immediately. The rip even uses the horizon as an axis to replicate itself below it. The sky connects with the waterway and creates a pinnacle site of fascination.

Lighting Observation 7.2 (A Grand Illumination)

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/10/12 – 7:38 – In a booth at the Grand Lux Cafe

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was sitting in the Grand Lux Cafe in Roosevelt Mall with my parents when they were here to visit last weekend. The wall has small cut outs into the wall next to every booth. Inside the cut outs are four small lights that shine straight up and illuminate each box. Each box is covered with circular wooden cut outs. The light inside the box was shining up and the light from our table was shining down and made for two very different looks reflecting on the same surface of the circular grating covering the box.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:  My parents were in town last weekend to visit for my birthday and to see Much Ado. On saturday night  the three of us went to the Grand Lux Cafe for a nice dinner together. We were seated in a booth all the way in the back of the restaurant. The inside of the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and has high ceilings with grand lighting all over the room. Next to each booth there is a six inch deep cut out into the wall that creates a box recessed into the wall that is about three feet by two feet. The opening is covered with a series of circle cut outs that are touch at the edges that is mostly open and acts like a grate to cover each recessed box. The inside of each box is painted with a reflective gold paint. At the bottom of the boxes there were small lights that were pointed straight up. These lights illuminated reflected off of all surfaces on the inside of the box and made the box appear to glow.

The wood that made up each circle was a dark mahogany type wood that did not absorb much light. The contrast between the dark circles on and the bright glow of the boxes was very intense and made the room look very fancy and very luxurious with all of the glowing gold contrasting with the dark wood. All of the light that was coming out of the box was a very rich amber color and gave a very warm and welcoming feel to the booth and to the room. The light that was hung over our table was shining down wards in a soft white, the color generated by a standard incandescent light bulb. The ambient light from this lamp  reflected straight off of the sheen of the wood stain on the tops of each circle covering the recessed boxes next to our booth. The illusion that was created was very interesting and gave an amazing contrasting appeal. I thought that the illusion was very cool to see this extremely dark wood grating appearing to contain an intense and very saturated ball of lighting that was accented on the top with the harsh white light coming from the lamp above our table.

Light Observation 5.1 (The Last Touch of Sun)

1) 2/26/12 – 5:22 PM – Adams quad, facing east.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was walking out of Lowe on saturday evening just as the sun was going down. The tops of Barnard hall and Davison Hall were lit by the sun and the rest of the buildings were in shadows along with the quad. The library was also lit up by the sun as well.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was working all day in Lowe on saturday. Finally at 5:00 I began to clean up so that I could go meet all of the people who were in tech for dinner before I needed to go to Vagina Monologues. I finally stepped out of Lowe on my way to the student center. The air was clear from all of the wind that day and the sky was mostly clear. The sun was just beginning to set and the shadows on the ground were becoming very long. I could tell that it was starting to get to be the time of day where the sun was low enough that the air began to feel colder and blue. The shadow of Lowe was being cast all the way across the quad and onto the building across the way. The shadow made it three quarters of the way up the building and made the quad feel cooler and more somber. The upper 25% of Barnard Hall was illuminated as the sun cut through the pollution of the long Island air and cast a burning yellow-orange color onto its walls. Davison hall seemed to match this phenomena along with a majority of the library.

As I walked through the “cool” air and darker shadows I looked up at the warmer “polluted” light that was being cast upon the buildings around me. Looking at these colors with their richness and intensity seemed to make me feel warmer just by imagining the sunlight hitting me as I walked through the quad. It was an amazing sensation to be in such a “cool” setting yet feel warmer, simply by responding to the light around me even though that light was simply out of reach.

Lighting Observation #2 – Lee Moore

1. Wednesday, Feb 8, 2012. 3:43 AM, My dorm room

2. My room is dark and quiet except for one string of multi-colored christmas lights that stretches from my door to just above the headboard of my bed. They cast a dim reddish light across the room, with each light projecting a tiny halo on the wall of the room.

3.The christmas lights in my room cast just barely enough light to see the outline of my furniture. Everything in this half light is shadowy, warm and close. It makes my room feel small and sweet and mine. The halos around each tiny individual light are bright and rich, projecting little fingers of beauty in small circles around them. The light they give off isn’t very strong, but it radiates pure colorwonderful that reminds your heart to beat slow and deep. The warmth and familiarity of something so simple as christmas lights takes me back to hot cocoa and peppermint ice cream, and laying under my christmas tree in Baltimore. With my heater on and The Mountain Goats playing through my speakers, late nights with my christmas lights are the most peaceful and comforting life ever gets at Hofstra.

Lighting Observation 1 – Lee Moore

1. 1-27-2011, 5:00 PM, Walking from Memorial Quad to the Library

2. Sunset from the west cast a bright tangerine glow across the side of the library tower, with a golden spill across the tops of the trees.

3. Walking from the studio past the library last friday, it was cold. It was wintery and blustery and January. The last thing I was expecting to see as I shivered was a huge swatch of Caribbean tangerine across the brutalist concrete of our library. The color was clementines, Florida sunsets, sherbet, and tiger lilies all rolled into one. It was pure summer wonderful in the middle of New York winter. Such incongruous light at a time like that evoked a warmth that did more than my wool jacket to keep out the wind.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 5)

1)   2/27/11 – about 8:15pm – In front of Hofstra Hall

2)   A very yellowish light coming from inside Hofstra Hall, surrounded by darkness.

3)   This light really spoke to me because it reminded me of the movies and how I have seen several shots or scenes where everything is dark except for one warm yellow lighting source coming from inside some house or something.  This moment was full of relaxation and almost had a romantic feeling to it.  When first glancing at it I pictured someone sitting in a large arm chair, ready for bed, reading and there just being a fireplace or soft colored desk lamp illuminating the area.  The light was so warm feeling and cozy.  It was surrounded by the darkness outside that helped create a high contrast.  The moment was very fairytale like and it had a sort of fantasy like quality to it.  For some reason I am attracted to this kind of light, considering I have mentioned it before in a way and I think it just has a very inviting feel to it.
