Light Observation

  1. Tuesday, March 14th, 7:45 pm; Bill of Rights Hall 12th Floor Kitchen
  2. The stadium lights reflecting off of the field hockey field’s snow.
  3. While enjoying a much wanted snow day with friends, I saw out the large wall-length window in the kitchen what I thought to be a freshly laid ice rink.  Excited, I asked my friend about Hofstra’s new winter wonderland addition, only to notice upon closer look through the window it was actually just the stadium lights reflecting off of the snow to give it a sheer, glossy appearance.  I found it very cool (no pun intended) that the light was able to take one texture and make it appear to be something different, and it made me wonder how often lighting designers do that onstage with different materials and fabrics.

Lighting Observation

  1. 3/16/17, 7:24 AM, boyfriend’s bedroom
  2. The blinds were shut on the window directly in front of his bed, facing the street. The sunrise still came through. It made the window and the walls glow light yellow.
  3. I woke up two hours before I wanted to and the room was growing brighter as the minutes passed. I looked across the room to one of the three windows. The one behind me and the one to my left did not have much light shining through, but the window directly across was glowing yellow. The walls surrounding it appeared to be shining, and the horizontal blinds made stripes. The sun was rising in the east and flooding the room. I was a little angry at myself for waking up so early, but seeing this light made up for it. It felt very peaceful and calming and I was able to fall back asleep.

Single subject, single light source

3. Single subject, single light source

4. The sunlight came through my dorm window and directly onto my face, making my eyes light up and my face glow. I took a lot of pictures of myself sitting in these warm rays. Eventually I pulled the shades down so the sun wouldn’t be in my eyes.

Lighting Observation 7

  1. America’s Center Convention Complex, St. Louis, MO; 3/8/17; 8:15 PM
  2. At the USITT Conference last week, the floor show had tons of lights, mostly red and blue, shining on the ceiling with many different gobos in them, most notably one that looked like scribbles.
  3. As I was looking around the thousands of people in the crowd, I looked up and saw a blue light in a squiggly line. It was by far the most interesting and unique gobo I had ever seen and It made me feel really excited for the conference as I was sure I was about to learn about tons of brand new theatrical technology. I managed to remember to take out my phone and write down what I was seeing so I could make it a lighting observation later.

Photo Observation 7

  1. I took this picture of my dog in December.
  2. Theme: Single subject single light source
  3. This was taken right after we brought our new puppy home for the first time. The sun had just gone down and in our excitement we only turned on the one light above our TV. He was so wiped out that he fell asleep right after we fed him and I took this picture.
