Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: May 12th 2021, 7:30 PM, the Colonial Square Far East Resident Safety Representative booth.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunlight.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As the sun begins to set, it illuminates portions of the clouds in the sky. The sides facing the sun are a bright yellow color, and create a very happy and relaxing feel. The sunlight also shines down on the field next to the booth, making the grass appear golden yellow. The setting sunlight creates a feeling of peace as the world slowly fades into night.

Lighting Observations

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: A few days ago, evening time, in my 12th floor Enterprise dorm room.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunset.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My 12th floor room gives me a beautiful view of the sunset. Bright white/yellow light floods the sky as the sun begins to set over New York City. White rays from the sun burst through the clouds, creating an angelic feel. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, the sky turns shades of orange and pink. Although the sun disappears, the light coming from it does not. Beams of light remain, illuminating the sky.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Last night (May 11th 2021), sometime before 12AM, in my 12th floor Enterprise dorm room.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The artificial light coming from my Windows laptop.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The artificial blue light stings my eyes as I race to finish my forensic science lab report. The light is bright enough to burn my eyes, but not bright enough to illuminate my keyboard. The bright laptop screen makes for a stark contrast with the dark room around it. The glowing rectangle is engulfed by shadows.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Last night, sometime past 12AM, in my 12th floor Enterprise dorm room.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light coming from my LED desk lamp.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The harsh light coming from my LED desk lamp is the only thing that illuminates my room. The light is extremely harsh and bright. Although the light appears white, it seems to have slight blue/green undertones. The small light creates a powerful beam of light that helps me find my way through my dark dorm room.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Sometime 1-2 weeks ago in my 12th floor Enterprise dorm room.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunlight shining on the side of Vander Poel that faces my building.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunrise casts beautiful orange light on to the side of Vander Poel. The light itself is so bright that it makes the building itself appear orange. The light offers warmth and comfort against a contrasting blue/purple sky.

Photo Observation

ATTRIBUTES: This photo was taken by me in Connecticut over the 2020 summer.

THEME: Summer

DESCRIPTION: The photo showcases a beautiful sunrise on the beach. The bright orange ball of light illuminates the sky in rays of orange, yellow and pink. The reflection of the sun on the water almost resembles fire. The pink tinted ocean creates a feeling of warmth and relaxation.

Photo Observation

ATTRIBUTES: This photo was taken by my friend Joe and showcases me posing in Pride Park.

THEME: Wild Card (Cartoony)

DESCRIPTION: Although the photo was not enhanced or edited in any way, the lighting makes it seem like I Photocopied myself onto the background. There are almost no harsh shadows in the photo and therefore no harsh lines to separate myself from the background. The bright lighting paired with the basic colors within the photo make it look almost like a cartoon.

Photo Observation

ATTRIBUTES: Photo is of a Banksy art installment posted to Banksy’s Instagram.

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: The word “surreal” creates a feeling of dream-like unreality. To me, surreal means extremely bizarre and not logical. I chose this Banksy art piece because of the absurdity going on and the odd, dream-like lighting. The lighting reminds me of the weird, slightly uncomfortable lighting you run into when you are having a strange dream. It reminds me a lot of the mythical “back rooms” that many people have dreams about. The rats represent a surreal fear that many have that is then reflected into their dreams.

Light Lab #2

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

INSTRUMENTS USED:

  • #1 Cyc, R15 (Yellow)
  • #2 Cyc, R80 (Blue)
  • #3 Cyc, R27 (Red)
  • 26 Degree Source Four, ETC 426, Upper Stage Right, 6800 (Butterscotch)
  • 36 Degree Source Four, ETC 436, Stage Right with Distant Trees Gobo, 7700 (Peach Amber)

INSPIRATION: When thinking about a fall sunset in Vermont, I envision the colorful trees and the golden sun. I added a lot of orange light to capture the feel of the fall leaves and added various pinks and yellows to captivate the various colors present in a sunset. The pink backdrop represents the sky and the various colors it turns during a sunset. I made the golden light particularly distinct to represent the setting sun, and added a tree Gobo to captivate the shadows cast by the fall trees when the sun begins to set.

2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

INSTRUMENTS USED:

  • #1 Cyc, R15 (Yellow)
  • #2 Cyc, R80 (Blue)
  • #3 Cyc, R27 (Red)
  • 26 Degree Source Four, ETC 426, Front Stage Left with Anglican Window Gobo, 4740 (Monday Morning Blue)
  • 26 Degree Source Four, ETC 426, 2nd Pipe, Center Stage with 70’s Gobo, 4740 (Monday Morning Blue)
  • Par64wfl, GE FFS, 1st Pipe, Stage Left, L004 (Medium Bastard Amber)
  • Par64mfl, GE FFR, 2nd Pipe, Stage Left, L007 (Pale Yellow)

INSPIRATION: Gothic Cathedrals are typically large and contain little to no artificial light, and therefore rely on natural light to illuminate it’s contents. This inspired me to keep the stage relatively dark. The addition of blue and purple light is meant to capture the color of the sky at early dawn hours, when night has just begun to transition to day. I utilized two different Gobo’s to represent the patterns cast by stained glass windows and ceilings when light passes through the cathedral.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

INSTRUMENTS USED:

  • #1 Cyc, R15 (Yellow)
  • #2 Cyc R80 (Blue)
  • #4 Cyc R126 (Green)
  • 6” Fresnel, Overhead, Center Stage, 2240 (Apollo Straw 1/4 CTS)
  • 36 Degree Source Four, ETC 436, Stage Right with Wild Palms Gobo, L007 (Pale Yellow)
  • 36 Degree Source Four, ETC 436, Stage Left with Wild Palms Gobo, L007 (Pale Yellow)
  • 26 Degree Source Four, ETC 426, Upper Stage Right, 2240 (Apollo Straw 1/4 CTS)
  • 26 Degree Source Four, ETC 426, Upper Stage Left, 2240 (Apollo Straw 1/4 CTS)
  • 50 Degree Source Four, ETC 450, SL Boom, Stage Left, L007 (Pale Yellow)

INSPIRATION: When thinking of the Caribbean, I envision a sunny beach complimented by a bright blue sky. Noon is when the sun is highest in the sky, leading me to include a lot of bright white and yellow light into my photo. I also added palm Gobo’s to convey the feeling of being on a tropical beach. The blue backdrop is meant to represent the sky and the ocean.

4) Winter afternoon just before the snow

INSTRUMENTS USED:

  • #1 Cyc, R15 (Yellow)
  • #2 Cyc, R80 (Blue)
  • #3 Cyc, R27 (Red)
  • #4 Cyc, R126 (Green)
  • 6″ Fresnel, Overhead, Center Stage, 2110 (Apollo Orange 3/4 CTO)
  • 36 Degree Source Four, ETC 436, 2nd Pipe, Back Stage Right with Snowflake Fall Gobo, 2040 (Apollo Blue 1/4 CTB)
  • 36 Degree Source Four, ETC 436, 2nd Pipe, Back Stage Left with Snowflake Fall Gobo, 2040 (Apollo Blue 1/4 CTB)
  • Par64wfl, GE FFS, Stage Right, L237 (CID to Tungsten)
  • Par64wfl, GE FFS, Stage Left, L237 (CID to Tungsten)

INSPIRATION: Winter days are “short,” meaning the sun begins to set in the afternoon. Knowing this, I wanted to create a photo that captivated dusk and the transition from day to night. As a result I added a lot of cool toned purple and blue light. I captivated the setting sun through various orange and yellow colored lights. I chose to include a lot of orange because sometimes, before a snow storm occurs, the sky will change colors (yellow, purple, orange, etc.). I added snowflake Gobo’s with blue gels to captivate the traditional winter weather.
