Max Cerci – Light Observation

1) 4/30/14 8:59 waiting for class to begin.

2) The light against the water droplets on the window in class.

3) The barely visible light coming from the clouds just barely made it into the room, shining through the window, but not before hitting the droplets of water on the window. It was really cool to see each individual droplet shining differently. I noticed how the light gave the droplets dimension and made it easier to see the form of each individual droplet.

3) Dreamlike, Calm

4) I trudged down the pier, my feet felt like sandbags. The clouds streamed in around my head, making the scene feel like I was approaching the judgment day. The water below me reflected the dark night sky, and I could see shapes moving beneath the water. I could only imagine what lay below the surface of the water- creatures from the darkest corners of my mind. I walked down the pier further, passing the dimly lit benches. Through the clouds, the waning daylight peeked through, reminding that soon, all would be dark and still. I continued on to the end of the pier, where my nightmares awaited in the house at the end. The boathouse, hidden in shadow, was my final destination. Then, I woke up.

Photo Observation: In the Spotlight

3) In the Spotlight

4) The goal of “natural” lighting is to recreate an environment occuring around us. Most of what we think of as light is centered around the sun shining on an object. In this picture, the sun is shining into the depths of the ocean, giving a window into the mysterious deep. With such a huge environment it’s impossible for the sun to illuminate everything, so it becomes much more of a focus light in a specific area. The vastness creates an opportunity to creating and pull focus

Lighting Observation #10- Don’t text during dinner. It’s rude.

1. April 8th 2012, 5PM, North Jersey -Grandma’s House

2.Objective: I was eating Easter dinner when my phone illuminated behind my glass of water. The water was glowing a strong aqua blue.

3.Subjective: Hopefully everyone had a great Spring Break. I stayed here. On campus. Alone. With no friends. Luckily my grandmother only lives an hour away in North Jersey so I went there for Easter. So I was texting on my phone when my grandmother came over, hit me with a wooden spoon and told me to stop texting. She then filled my glass of water and placed it in front of me. My phone then received a text message and the screen illuminated the water. The water was glowing a bright, crisp blue. It was such an amazing observation that my violent Italian grandmother found it interesting and did not hit me. The condensation on the outside of the glass was very noticeable and detailed with the backlight. The water soaked up the light like a sponge. I think it would be interesting to test out different colors. The blue made the water seem pure and flawless. The water seemed more appetizing just because of a lighting effect. It was calming yet so spectacular. Until my grandmother hit me upside the head for texting.

Light Observation 9

1. 3/28/12, 9:42, lighting class

2. The light coming through the window is in the shape of the window on the floor and the trees are swaying but they create more blurry movement than a solid image.

3. In lighting class I noticed on the floor the light coming through the window was making a window image on the floor. While I was looking, I noticed that there was movement but I could not tell what was causing it at first. It looked like water was moving across the windows and it confused and intrigued me at the same time. I then realized that it was the trees blowing in the wind and was disappointed. I would have rather it would have been water.

Photo Observation #6 – Dripping Color

Photo taken by a user named Racket on this website – http://www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=9482/

Theme: Vibrant, Colorful, Saturated

When I look at this picture, I think of vibrant purification. The water looks so crisp, regardless of the variety of colors in the water. The colors are so bright and vivacious. The blotches fill the floor but this is not the focus of the picture. My eye is immediately brought to the drip midair. I notice the reflection of all the blotches within this drip. Somehow it takes all these colors in the picture and fits it all into this tiny drip. Maybe inside of that drip is another reflection, like an endless mirror. It keeps getting smaller and smaller. The ripples in the water affect the shape of the color and disrupt the proportion. These blotches are covered by the pool of water, using the water as lamination. Thought the colors cannot be manipulated themselves, the water on top of it can. As a result, the water can magnify, disorient, and affect the colors. The color is dripping off the picture.

Lighting Observation 4.1 (The reverse shadow)

1) 2/19/12 – 3:03 – southern tip of Manhattan, near Battery Park facing east towards Statue of Liberty

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was at battery park standing on the bike path facing east looking toward the Statue of Liberty. The sun was bright and reflecting off the water, onto the building behind us and creating a shadow in front of my friends and I.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was taking my two friends to see some of the sights in Manhattan this weekend on saturday. We head into the city mid afternoon and went down to Battery Park so that I could show them the view of the Statue of Liberty from the southern tip of Manhattan. We walked across the bike path and stood at the waters edge as they were in awe seeing the lady for the first time. The sun was beginning to get lower in the sky just to the left of the statue.

None of us had our sunglasses on and it was extremely difficult to look at the statue for very long as the sun was reflecting very intensely off of the water between us and the statue. We had to duck behind the large wooden posts that were sticking out of the water acting as tie downs for incoming boats. We used these giant posts to block the light out and catch glimpses of the statue through the cracks in the posts.

I was explaining to them what different things around us were and pointing out important  and significant landmarks all around us. At one point I pointed up and noticed that on the post in front of us there was a clear shadow of my gesturing hand and my body on the post we were hiding behind. What caught me off guard was how vivid our shadow was yet we were staring straight into the sun. What was happening is that the sun was reflecting off of the water and bouncing back up onto the skyscraper behind us and illuminating my friends and I from behind. It was a cool effect to be looking straight into the burning sun yet also looking at a clear shadow of myself right in front of me. As cool as this effect was I realized just how aware I need to be in lighting designs of where reflective surfaces are so that I dont create these odd phenomenons. This moment made me realize just how hard it really is to put light where you want it as well as keep it away from the places you don’t want it all at the same time.

Photo Observation #13

Philippe Ramette

SURREAL

This is a photo of surrealist photographer and installation artist Philippe Ramette. The scene itself is surreal, but the lighting adds to the overall effect: it has the same washed out, hazy feeling found in the lighting in Dalí paintings, though it is cool instead of warm in color. The overcast sky and the smog from the city diffuse the light, making the brown frame and black suit stand out against the water (the color of which is also exaggerated by contrast with the smoky blue.) It has the dreamlike quality that is essential to surrealism.

And here’s how he did it, if you’re curious.

Lighting Observation 2 (Week 8)

1) Thursday 1 pm, Bits and Bytes sitting by the window

2) Light from a near noon sun through the glass window through water streaming down the window.

3) I was sitting in Bits and Bytes eating my delicious chicken parm and reading Deathrap, when I noticed water running down the window. Then i noticed the moving rivulets of water were casting a pattern on the bright white pages of my book. It was like a moving gobo pattern with shadows and bluish gray colors moving and changing quickly across the pages. The sunlight was bright and pure outside bringing out the colors of the grass and trees in contrast to the stark white and gray of the pattern on the book. The mood created a clean and refreshing feeling. It was a bright cheerful feeling.
