Light Observation 5

Date.Time.Location: 2/25/19 9:05 PM Somer Center Chapel at Concordia College

Objective Description: I sat within this massive church for a service on Monday night. The chapel has no windows and all of the lights were switched off. There was no light emanating from the room except for the ten small candle lights that surrounded the altar.

Subjective Description:It was quite the unusual experience to see a chapel without any windows except for the ones in the hallway directly outside of it. The doors leading to these windows were shut before service effectively draining out all of the natural light from the room. Soon after this, the ten candles surrounding the altar were lit and an unusual phenomenon managed to capture my attention. What started off as pitch black was soon illuminated as the ten small orange lights from these candles managed to gradually breathe life back into the room and seemed to envelop everybody and everything in their warm embrace. These small lights filled me with quite a jovial sense of hopefulness not only for the rest of the night that remained but for the day that was to come in a matter of hours. These tiny lights at first appeared small and soon grew to overtake the entire room, the cold of the night looked to dissipate and the hopeful and happy warmth from the candles ushered in a great sense of optimism in everyone around me for the events that were to come.

Light Observation #5

  1. 2/28/19 11:00pm My living room
  2. The door to the backyard was open while I waited for my dog to come back inside. All of a sudden the motion light from the shed went off and shined into the house.
  3. The light from the shed was so bright it light up the yard as if it were a bright sunny day.

Light Observation 4

Date.Time.Location- 2/20/19. 12:15 PM. In my car on the Long Island Expressway driving home.

Objective Description- I am sitting in my car driving down the highway on my way back home. The sky is gray and snow eventually begins to fall. As the intensity of the snowfall increased, my vision began to blur and eventually seeing what was ahead of me on the road became difficult.

Subjective Description- The sky above me was gray with the threat of imminent snowfall. The gray color of the sky brought forth a certain dismal and gloomy feeling that was amplified once the snow began to fall. Eventually everything in front of me became so gray and blurry that something so simple as making out the lines on the road became a difficult task. The road back home seemed to become more and more obscure as the snowfall increased. Soon it seemed as if all that existed was this gray sheet that looked to consume the world around me. This ever present gray at first presented a sense of gloom and desolation, but soon brought out a sense of calm urgency in me. This was an acknowledgement of the fact that the path before me was fading fast, but if I maintained my present pace, eventually I would find my way home once again.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This lighting moment made me feel very calm. It was such a soft and pretty arrange of colors it made me feel safe and a little magical. Because of how the colors were not very natural colors, it made the room feel magical. This lighting moment was calming even with all the stress of life.

Light Observation #10

April 18th, 2018/ 5pm/ The Unity Project-Memorial (Calkins) Quad

Objective Description: I’m standing under the layer of yarn strings. The strings are blocking out the sun but there are many cracks that let in the suns rays.

Subjective Description: The Unity Projects giant yarn quilt is already beautiful, but having the sun shine from above it makes the yarn glow in a rainbow pattern. The cracks in the quilt also shine straight through and you can almost “see” the beams if you look down at the grass.
