Photo observation #5

From: http://www.ledinside.com/news/2013/4/lednews_201304271042

Theme: Shadow

Description: Overlapping shadows cross and crash, colours clashing across the white surface, creating a road map of confusion. The overlaying shadows maintain a 3D effect rather than flattening out the image.

Photo Observation #5

Theme: Shadows

I picked this photo because when I think about shadows my mind immediately jumps to shadow puppets. I really like the whole idea of shadow puppets especially ones where you can do them yourself with your hands. I like this photo because it shows the light source that is causing the shadow to be formed. I also really like that you can see all of what is causing the shadow. The shadow surrounded in so much light with little bits of light peeking through where the eyes are is just so satisfying to me.

Lighting Observation

  1. 2/2/17, 2:20 pm, Axinn Library
  2. Objective: I was in the quiet section of the Axinn library in the afternoon. I was sitting in a cubicle close to the large glass windows facing Davinson Hall. The sun was shining into the library and onto the nearby cubicles. The shadows that the trees cast came through and onto the cubicles as well.
  3. Subjective: The dullness of the quiet room in Axinn was cut by the glow of the sunlight coming through the wall of glass windows. The shadows of tree branches that fell onto my cubicle provided some relief from the strong rays of the sun. This transformed the dreary feeling of the room and gave it some animation.

4. When I think of shadows I usually think of the ways they are manipulated in photography. The positioning of the light combined with the placement of the object can be used to alter the shape of the shadow being cast. This is what I think is the most interesting aspect of shadows. Manipulating the shadows can create a more ambiguous shape, unrelated to the actual object casting the shadow.

  3. The light creates a shadow that finishes a picture. Instead of lighting being used to light actors that tell a story, the light is being used to create a story itself. I thought this was really cute, creative, and funny. And that this image fit the shadow theme well.

  1. I found this on my friends Pinterest page
  2. Theme: Shadow
  3. I feel like this photo is showing us another dimension. I love how the light is gray and is hitting the shoes as if there was someone in them, but there isn’t. Thats whats giving me an eerie feeling when I look at this.

Seeing Projects From the Shadow

  1. Location: Lawrence T. Hubert School of Comm 2nd floor slide theater room during Senior Film Class, February 28, 2017 at 3-6:30 pm.
  2. Objective: The lights are all turned out in the showcase room. Only the glow from the projector and the two computer screens illuminate the audience from the front.
  3. Subjective: When other students are showing of their projects, all I want to do is hide away. Since I am shooting my senior film on March 23-26 and still do not have everything set, there is a constant fear of failure. This showing is a reminder that I have not done any shooting yet. So, I wait in the shadows, wondering if I will be able to sit up front and be shown through the light.

  1. Taken by me from the back of a camel in Israel.
  2. Theme: Shadows
  3. I took this picture in Israel last summer, and it is honestly one of my favorite pictures from the trip. Shadows are interesting because they can disguise something or morph it, like when you’re a little kid and you feel like a giant with your long shadow, or it can be an exact outline of its creator, as it does in this picture. It tells the story in literal black and white, almost as if these shadows were made for the purpose of telling a story as they would be in theatre.

  3. Shadows can be a mystery like the last theme. It helps us open our mind with imagination because you can look at a shadow and think of the many things it can be. Everyone perceives something different. What I like about this photo is you can see the object but the shadow reflects something different. A circle with a shadow heart, two different shapes but the same object depending on the angle and lighting. Shadows are interesting and it is an art because you can create different shapes and play around with just a simple object.

Shadow of the Unfaithful

Source: George Nicholas’ Cinematography Class Shoot at the Lawrence T. Hubert School of Communication, December 8, 2016.

Theme: Shadow

Description: Taken inside the Comm Building studio, this photo was taken within a constructed bedroom. The walls, floor, bed, and window are fake, with everything seen being the only things built. While only this part of the set is shown, numerous lights shine onto the set and create shadows.

This photo physically and emotionally portrays the possibility of someone being unfaithful. The shadows across my face and on the female model attempt to hide us against the open window. However, there is light shining through that shows us through the shadows, unable to hide our sin. Despite staying around a paradise as seen from the window, both the model and I attempt to stay in the shadows away from prying eyes.
