Light Observation 2

1)   4/7/11- 9:25 am- Elevator in Enterprise Hall

2)   The lights in the elevator seemed to flicker a little bit and they are very standard indoor lights.

3)   This lighting moment was mysterious and interesting at the same time.  Early in the morning I was on my way to class and I took the elevator.  When I got in I was alone and it could almost immediately hear elevator music in my head.  The lighting was very bright and like elevator lights should be.  This all changed when they seemed to flicker and dim a bit.  I don’t know if this was a result of me being tired or if it really happened but anyways at that moment I thought I was in the tower of terror and in some twilight zone episode and the elevator was going to suddenly drop.  The lighting provoked this feeling by being so mysterious with the constant flickering and considerable dimness that was unusual.  This was a sort of frightening lighting experience but it was one that was memorable and really created a strong feeling.

Light Obsevation 1 Devin Gee

1)   4/5/11- around 3 pm- Dempster Hall, Studio B

2)   A studio light coming from the grid. Very bright fluorescent light that was very white in color.

3)   This lighting moment felt like a dream, this white fluorescent light was so bright that it blinded me just looking at it.  This light reminded me of the white light you supposedly see when you are entering the afterlife.  It felt like a dream to me because it made me think of that kind of light and it pulled me out of reality for a second and made me feel as though I was daydreaming in class.  The other thing the light reminded me of was in the movies when you wake up in a hospital bed after a crazy operation and all you see is a really bright white light shining down on you and then the doctors lean in and you can start to see their faces. This quality of light really speaks the feeling of dreamy to me and it was very powerful.

Photo Observation

Mysterious

When I thought of mysterious, I immediately thought of a foggy night in a forest where you can’t see far in front of you, and you are essentially walking into the unknown.

Lighting Observation

When: Sunday Afternoon

Where: Dog Park

Objective: It was a party cloudy day and the clouds kept passing over the sun. I thought it was amazing how much the overall atmosphere and even my mood would become more cheerful whenever the sun was not blocked by the clouds.

Observation 10B

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/6/11; 10:00AM; sidewalk in between VanderPoel Hall and Constitution Hall

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Sunlight shines through trees onto sidewalk

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunlight created a textured pattern on the sidewalk near Constitution.  The shadows and the bright parts together created a very naturalistic feeling.  It felt much like a bright, sunny spring day.

Light Observation 10A

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/6/11; 7:43PM; in front of Calkins Hall

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Uplight on American Flag on flagpole

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The bright white light illuminated the American Flag on its pole in front of Calkins Hall.  Even though there were lampposts around that lit up the surrounding area, the light made the waving flag feel extremely majestic and powerful.  The dimmer ground juxtaposed greatly against the brightly lit flag.

THEME: Mysterious

DESCRIPTION: The purpleish uplight on Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World creates a very mysterious feeling.  The low lamps on the sidewalk in front juxtapose against the gigantic looming mountain behind it.  The color, quality, and angle of the light create a feeling of the unknown/unnatural and an intrigue to explore further.
