Photo Observation 2/8

Photo taken by me

This photo is taken on a summer night in a harbor in Salem, MA. I like this picture because you can see the contrast between the pinks and oranges of the sun and the blues of the sky and the ocean. There is also a cool circular effect that the sun creates in the middle of the photo, almost like a halo.

Summer Photo Observation

Dunkin Cottage Reality

Theme: Summer

This image is of a beach in my town in which  my friends and I frequent exclusively in the summer time. The bright yellow sun with an orange gradient in to purple tones combined with the white foaming of the ocean reminds me of carefree days when all responsibilities are set aside and one can simply relax at the beach and watch the sun set while listening to the waves crash upon the shore. The purple tones looming over the sky signifying the end of a happy day represents a lullaby type soothing, kindly telling the world to rest for the day.

Surreal Photo Observation

Theme: Surreal

This picture captures a vibrant red sunset. I’ve always found bright red sunsets to be so mystifying as a typical sunset consists of softer yellows and oranges. However, this bright red captures the passion and intensity the hue normally makes me think of. Seeing the typical blue sky be slowly enveloped by this punch of red feels truly surreal.

Lighting Observation

April 7th, 2023

Time: 7:30 pm

Location: Narragansett Rhode Island

I was driving home and I saw a sunset.

As I was driving to my hometown I saw a beautiful gradient of orange and pink which covered the horizon above the trees. As I continued to drive for the next several minutes I watched the sunset turn from pastel pink and blues to vibrant combination of magenta, red, and orange. This beautiful array of colors felt to represent the hope and tranquility that comes with returning home.

Lighting Observation

Date:  3/30/23 @ 7:30pm

Location: Netherlands Bridge

I was walking towards the bridge to go back to my dorm when I noticed the sunset in the background.

The sunset was a beautiful paisley blue gradient into white and lastly a slight yellow sun at the horizon line. In the foreground, floor lights barely lit the entrance to the bridge while the rest of the bridge remained a dark silhouette outlined by the sunset. This moment felt as though a beautiful sunset was trying to calm my mood, but the harsh and dark bridge kept the stressors and difficulties of the work day constantly present looming over what could be a wonderful moment.

February 6, 2022 – Picture taken by my mom in Florida

Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

My mom is currently in Florida for the next three weeks and on Monday she sent me this photo. I really enjoyed the bright orange sky that is showcased in the photo. It reminded me of when I used to go with my family to Florida to see my mom’s side of the family and it made me very nostalgic. It also made me sad because I’m here and she’s in Florida.

Brennan Sunset Photo

From: My camera roll, taken November 22nd 2022. Sunset from my bedroom window in Hempstead, NY.

Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

This was a photo from the end of last semester. I had just wrapped on a film project I had been working on, and this was my last night in New York before heading home for Thanksgiving break. I have a West facing window in my bedroom, and often have a chance to view the sunset over the trees and buildings. This particular sunset struck, it had already crossed the horizon (at least as far as I could tell from my perspective) and the deep twilight blue was taking over the sky — broken by a strip of glowing orange as the last streams of sunlight bent around the far curve of the Earth. The glow from the light silhouetted the neighborhood, which turned into a mass of shape and form. It looked pretty cool, so I took a few photos. I was in the sunset of the semester, and that Thanksgiving was the first real break I had from working on any big projects in months. It was a great moment of catharsis knowing I could relax for a while.

I was feeling a little homesick so I decided look through some of my favorite pictures from the past year when I came across a picture from our “Senior Sunset,” a day in which all the seniors in my class met up at a local beach to see the sunset. This photo especially reminded me of the beautiful sunset we watched that night sitting on those rocks. I remember the sun being such a vibrant gold that it almost hurt to watch, but you had to in order to see the rest of the pinks and purples hovering over the horizon. I remember it feeling surreal to witness something so beautiful.

April 5, 2022 – Picture taken by me at my best friends house (Atlanta, GA)

Theme: Sunrise/ Sunset

As I was leaving my best friend Katie’s house, we both pointed out how beautiful the sunset was, which prompted me to take this picture. The orange color makes me feel very calm and relaxed because it symbolizes the end of my work and school day and the start of me being able to relax. The warm light also makes me feel nostalgic because I miss being able to drive to my best friend’s house to see her whenever I wanted to.

Lighting Observation #9

4/13/2022 – 7:21pm – Wilmington, DE

Objective Description: Driving along the highway in Wilmington, DE the sun is setting on the horizon against a dusty blue sky. As we drive the orange and pink sunset passes between the trees and building skylines

Subjective description: As we drive across the bridge the orange wave of light punches me in the face with warmth. As we speed by the light follows while all the trees and buildings pass by. There is harmony in the orange power between the dusty blue sky and the sea of green trees below. The sun soon faded and is left with nothing but the unknown under the sky.
