Theme: Cold

I wanted to find something evocative of coldness that could easily appear warm with only a simple lighting change. Searching for basements and warehouses eventually lead me to this image. What drew me to it most was how simple it was. It is just a pretty typical industrial warehouse loading dock, seen from inside. There are only two sources of light, both of which are visible. The first is the sunlight that is blowing out the highlights on the windows, which is a stark white point in the image. The next is the overhead fluorescent tubes that you can spot in the upper left corner, but which more than likely cover the entire ceiling of this room. These lights are both tuned toward a very cool temperature, but only slightly. It might be a trick of the camera, but regardless it has a serious effect. What should be white light has an almost silvery/blue twist to it. The lack of color also helps sell the effect — with most of the image being made up of various grays. Although not directly related to lighting, the surface materials and texture add to the effect. The semi-reflective concrete feels like a garage or a basement, something you would not want to walk on without some good shoes and a warm pair of socks. Aside from that feeling, it also feels cold in the sense that is seems pretty lifeless. There are no human subjects, and no interesting objects. Everything you see in the image was created to serve a solely practical purpose, a byproduct of some industry that demanded things like garage doors and pallet jacks and tightly wrapped bundles of boxes shoved into the backs of trailers. Not exactly a place you would want to hang out or spend time with friends.

Description: My self-given theme was horror as I find lighting related to horror so interesting but I didn’t want the classic black and white so I found this image. I really like how there is color but the photo still is kind of scary. I think its really cool how there are the three different colors shining in but there is very little spillage between the colors, they are all in their distinctive sections. I also think the angle and texture of each lighting block is really interesting as the streakiness and elongated angles add a horrific element to the photo. Finally, I like how the angle elongated the shadow of the man because it twists it into something even more terrifying.

THEME: Wildcard

DESCRIPTION: I chose this picture because I thought it uses warm and cool colors in a very interesting way. The magenta light coming from the lamp and the deep blue light coming from the sign create a very calming atmosphere that I think is very cool. The dim lighting in the room also contrasts with the bright light coming from the neon sign, which gives the sign a almost glowing affect around it, which I also thought was very interesting.

3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because the people in the photo are using small LED lights and taking thousands of photos of the lights in order to create images in the air. The different very bright and vibrant colors stand out against the dark background and light the two subjects in the photo in a very interesting way. I think that because it’s created without the use of photoshop or any editing and is all made in the real world gives it a very surreal feeling.

3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this image because I like how eery it appears. The dark shadows around the face of the baby makes it appear sunken deeper into the skull of the larger person. The lines across the portrait add to the old and creepy mood of it. Additionally, the greyscale aid in this setting of an eery atmosphere.

3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because I loved the way you can see the beams of light peaking through the flowers. I think that the way the flowers separate the light source from the sun into a bunch of tiny beams of light. I also think that the warm colors from the sun compliment the colors of the flowers to create the spring atmosphere.

THEME: Advertisement/Desire

DESCRIPTION: I chose this image for two reasons. First, I thought the lighting almost intensifies the cheeseburger, making it much more appetizing to the viewer. The moisture of the meat and the ketchup shines in the light, adding dimension to the cheeseburger and making it look much more real (a quality I imagine fast food restaurants always wish to convey). The bun is perfectly round and plump, creating the ideal image of a cheeseburger, and its curves are highlighted by the sidelight shining on the burger. The second reason I chose this image is that I love McDonald’s cheeseburgers, and I think this image looks extremely tasty.

3. I chose this picture because of the green light coming from behind the person. I like how the lights from behind the bars illuminates them and gives them a green appearance despite the fact that they are not green. I also like how the bars are the focus of the picture while the hallway is dimly lit by a green light, and the person is just a silhouette.

2. I felt this photo was a good representation of lighting for St. Patrick’s Day because not only was it taken in an Irish pub, but there is also a green hue on all of the faces of the patrons. The atmosphere is lively and warm while also delineating that fact that it is night time outside. The light strips behind and to the side of the people at the tables reflects off of the ceiling and the glassware on the bar. There is a white light source directly in front of the people nearest the camera which makes them more easily visible than the people behind them.

3. The street is lit by a single lamp post which shines an amber light down on to the street. The haze in the air allows you to see the beam of light as it comes down on to the ground.
