Lighting Observation #3

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Feb 16th, 9:55 pm, door window in Lowe 106

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Two lights outside seen through window

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Two lights shining outside the door. Only a shred of light is peaking through the window. It seems to get smaller and smaller the longer I stare. The brilliance of their glow out shines the rest of the lights inside of the room. They have stolen the show.

Lighting Observation #3

  1. Thursday, 5:30 p.m., Unispan
  2. I was walking across the unison and noticed this beautiful sunset peeking through the trees. There was a giant orange ball(the sun) that lit up everything in its path a vibrant orange and and the sky was a gradient of blue, from light to dark as you looked up.
  3. I was walking across the unison after class and looked over at this beautiful sunset that seemed to light up the entire sky. It was very calming, and made me feel warm as i had just walked through the freezing winter air. It was a beautiful ending to a very long day.

Photo Observation #3

  2. Night Life
  3. I chose this photograph because when i think of night life i think of groups of people stumbling home after a long night of partying. I liked this photo because it does’t show anyones faces because when your walking in and out of people after a party you don’t really notice anyone else. Also, the somewhat blurry quality almost adds a certain affect of “stumbling” home.

Lighting Observation

  1.  2/16/17, 3:47 pm, sitting on the bench outside of Davison Hall
  2. Objective Description: The sun was shining through the trees behind Hofstra Hall. The light squeezed between the branches of the tree and lit up the area where the bench was located.
  3. Subjective Description: The light shining in between the branches casts scattered light on all of the surrounding objects. Warm rays of yellow and orange brightened the entire area. The speckled light combined with the surrounding nature created a peaceful environment.

Photo Observation

2. Me: Maggie Sullivan

3. The second this theme was assigned I knew exactly what I was going to take a picture of. Usually a cat, which I’ve named Pretchous, is easily spotted in the square in this photo. I went out to this exact spot almost every night this week to get a photo of this cat under this light for the night life theme. Sadly, she never showed up which I thought was odd until I found out some hot gossip from my suite mate. What I found was that the cat that normally sleeps under this warm and happy light is pregnant! I chose this photo for the night life theme because when I think of the night life here at Hofstra I think of all the little creatures that live here throughout the night, such as these cats. Even though Pretchous never showed up, this spot and the light she sleeps under always reminds me of the night life at Hofstra.

Light Observation

  1. Thursday 7:30pm on the steps to the uni-span.
  2. I had my lighting moment as I was walking up the steps to the uni-span in the freezing cold and wind. The light was orange in color and lit up the doors as I walked in.
  3. This light provided the promise of warmth as I zipped up my jacket and ran toward it in the freezing cold as I was coming back from the south side of campus. The light felt welcoming and I knew that once I passed through it, I would feel warm again.

Photographer: William P. Gottlieb

3. Theme: Night Life

4. Description: In this photo there are only a few lamp posts lighting the street. Most of the light is coming from the neon signs hanging from the buildings. The neon light is reflecting off of the water on the road, and shining on the cars. This light consists of many bright colors, bringing life to the street at night. This photo fits this theme because neon lights demonstrate that even at night, the city is still alive and bustling.

Light Observation

  1. In a car parked near home in the city on Feb 12.
  2. Light reflecting through the front window of the car.
  3. I was sitting in the car waiting for it to warm up. This was around the time we had the little snow storm. The front window was full of ice that has been sitting there for a while. The ice was see through, so the car parked in front of me turned on the the lights went on too. I saw it through the ice and it was interesting to stare at because it wasn’t blinding or hurting my eyes like it usually does. I could also see all the details on the ice and every little bump or crack as I kept staring. It almost looked liked the sun since it was so blurry. The ice looked really pretty as the lights reflected off of it, too bad I had to use the wipers to take it off.

Heavenly, Awoken Excitement

Theme: Night Life

Description: Numerous spotlights are turned on, most are with a light blue-white gaze while four in the back are a light lavender. Each spotlight is going into a different direction, yet somehow is able to make a shape within the chaos. The environment around the light is a dark blue that is intensified by the crowd’s green glow props and green glowing parts of the environment. Most likely blacklight was used for this party scene.

Seeing this picture instantly raises my heartbeat and fills me with excitement. While this picture is a party, the way the lights and colors are arranged reminds me of a heavenly, welcoming place that fills you with joy. It makes me think of the song “Sleepyhead” by Passion Pit. This scene of light makes me want to continue staying awake.

Light Observation

1 In the upper props room of Adams, February 16. 2 pm

2 Sun light coming through the window and hitting the stacks of furniture.

3 I was in upper props looking for table legs; furniture is stacked high all around me. Pale sunlight steams through the window and illuminates little squares where ever it lands. The whole room felt more like a grandma’s attic with all the old furniture and the dust floating through the sunlight. It was all very peaceful.
