Lighting Observation

Date/Time/Location: 4/23/2019, 7:45pm, in the car headed to Philadelphia

Objective: I was in the passenger seat on a highway (in the Bronx maybe?) headed toward Philadelphia passing underneath a bridge. The bridge had arches that were each lit from the base of the arches.

Subjective: The floor lights illuminating the underside of the arches accentuated the curve and aesthetic appeal of the unique architectural element of this bridge.

Photo Observation

Attribute: I took this picture in San Antonio July of 2018.

Theme: Spring

This picture reminds me of Spring because the lighting projection onto the church is vibrant. It especially reminds of Spring even though the picture was taken in Summer, because the lights in this picture (the full projection was a video) is full of pastel colors reminding me of Springtime.

Light Observation 10

Date.Time.Location- 4/18/19. 10:00PM. Inside of the I NEED MORE punk rock store in Manhattan.

Objective Description- I ventured into the east village in manhattan this night to pay a visit to a long time friend and former employer at the Orchard street punk rock emporium called I NEED MORE which is named after the Iggy Pop song. Stepping into the store, one notices that the main sources of light in the building are 80’s style neon lights that envelop the store in a distinctive pink hue.

Subjective Description- If there was one time period that I wish I would’ve been born into, there is no question that it would’ve been the 1980’s. Everything from the styles of clothing to the colors to the music to just everything about the 80’s seemed absolutely wild and free. This store functions for me quite in the same fashion as a time machine as the neon lights together with the leopard and zebra print rugs, the smell of leather, the pink wall paper, the Doc Marten boots, and the sewed up and pinned up denim allow me to catch a glimpse of what walking into the 80’s may have felt like. These lights in particular I believe are the most effective element here however, as they completely consume the entirety of the store and serve to shut out the outside world of the 2010’s and create a sort of bubble, a sort of alternate world within this tiny shop where the colors were brighter, the clothing was wilder, and the times were much more peaceful. Moments such as this serve to remind me of not only the importance of lighting in creating a particular atmosphere, but also of just how important it is to attain a proper combination of lighting, scenic, and sound design (you got to love Iggy Pop!) for the purposes of bringing a design concept to life or, in this case, provide people with a window through which they can look back to a time that served to introduce styles and ideas that changed the world forever!

Lighting Observation

4.14.19 5:00pm My backyard
1. I was in my backyard taking photos of my brother for my project. The fog was rolling in on the water and the sun was still trying to shine through.
2. As the day was winding down the fog was rolling in. The erie and ominous feeling the fog gave off was something out of a Alfred Hitchcock movie. I was only able to last a few minutes outside until the mist swallowed me up.

Light observtion

Location: 4/18/19 in the tunnel of the LIRR train 7:36am

The interesting thing about the tunnels is that every 4 feet or so they have a single light source handing above. This was interesting because it highlighted the arches that were built into the walls. As well, it created shadows from the lines of pipes that were also hung above it. The shadows were interesting because it always changed as I observed a new on but the walls would actually be crumbling away which made it a lot more evident because the light highlighted it.

The lights gave me a kind of somber vibe because there was only one light source that I was focused on at a time. The darkness encompasses the surrounding of light as it illuminated just the middle. The walls were crumbling away which gave the feel of deterioration and the breakdown that time causes on an object.

Lighting Observation

April 19 Outside Colonial Square 1 am

Objective : I was walking back from a friends house, and when I got back to Colonial square, there was a fog that made the lights a lot more brighter than normal.

Subjective: The lights looked like orbs in the sky that lit up my path back to my dorm.

Lighting Observation 10

April 13th at 7:31pm, outside of the Student Center, walking past Bill and Alliance halls.
I had been walking back from dinner with one of my friends, and I noticed that the sky had a really interesting color scheme going on that night.
Ok, so there’s this book, called Mistborne, or something like that. Anyway, I’ve never read it, but the cover has this really pretty color schematic of these purples and pinks blending in to one another. That was essentially what the sky looked like. It was this beautiful blend of purples and pinks, with just a hint of an orangey-yellow sprinkled in. The colors were streaked in a repeating pattern, so it went purple, pink, orangey-yellow, pink, purple, and repeat. It was partially obscured by the dorm building and a few trees in the way, but because of the sky’s color, as well as the fading light for the day, these things were all cloaked in shadows, making them appear black. I’m pretty sure that part of why they appeared this way was because none of these objects were in the direct path of the fading sunlight, but the contrast reminded me, again, of a YA fantasy over.

Lighting Observation 10

4/14/19 730pm Hofstra parking lot

Objective: The parking lot lamps were illuminating through the thick fog.

Subjectively: The the little amount of light on the dark, foggy night appeared as the only comforting thing in the uneasy atmosphere of dark, dense fog.

Lighting Observation

Date/time/location: 4/17/19 10:05pm Apartment

Objective: I was in my friend’s apartment in Chelsea and light was spilling through their thin drapes.

Subjective: Faint blue light from the street light filtered through the powder blue curtains in Sarah’s adorable studio apartment in Chelsea.

Lighting Observation #10

Date, Time, Location: 4/17/19, Around 2pm, Chinatown

Objective description: While walking through Chinatown with my brother, we walked on a street that was half lit and half dark and turned a corner. Right before the turn, there was a group of people taking a tour and the light hit the top of their heads.

Subjective Description: This lighting was all natural. Since there was only lighting from the back top, it was not flattering in a normal sense of stage lighting. This lighting showed the time of day mainly.
