Light Observation

1. March 27th, ~6pm

2. I was driving home for spring break wearing my sunglasses and the sun came in from the side at just the right angle.

3. The sun was at just the right angle so that the light slanted in through the window and reflected off the inside of my sunglasses and back into my eye. It was bright, golden and warm. It made everything glow around me, and it perfectly silhouetted the tall trees I was walking past. Normally, I enjoy theses lighting moments. I like noticing the world around me, but this one was while I was driving and the reflection back into my eye was a little blinding. That gave this lighting kind of a schizophrenic effect – making me feel warm and happy but also quite discombobulated.

Max Cerci – Lighting Observation

1) 3/23/14 around 6:30 ish – Sunset – East River

2) The sun setting over Manhattan from the view point of the east river before Throgs Neck Bridge

3) As I drove back towards Long Island I turned to my right to see a truly stunning picture. The sun was in the process of setting behind Manhattan an had left the whole city, including the bridges, in silhouette. The sky at the top of manhattan acted as a canvas painting every color from yellow, to blue, to green, to pink: Illuminating the sky in a canvas of different colors. I found myself thinking of the crayon craft where you melt a bunch of crayons and get a mixture of different colors across your canvas.

Lighting Observation #7

1. Location: 3/11/14, Outside Speigal Theater, 9:15pm

2. Objective Description: The moon is out and there some clouds.  There is light coming from a lamp lighting up the walkway.

3.  Subjective Description: The moonlight creates a dim atmosphere and creates wonderful shadows from the tree branches. At the end of the walkway is a lamp that is giving a nice glow to the area. It’s fairly dark but the trees are visible and their features are dark and richly lit by the moon.

Light Observation #7

1) Portsmouth House, Colonial Square. 12:30 PM 3/11/14

2)Transitioning from inside my dorm to outside.

3)When I opened the door to the courtyard of Colonial Square, I wasn’t expecting the atmosphere of pure joy that was waiting for me. The sun shone brightly everywhere, illuminating everything in all the best ways. Each blade of grass shone with the promise of spring time, and the yellow light around me filled me with the aura of immense happiness.

Light Observation – Max Cerci

1) 3/12/14 8:53am Waiting for Lighting Class to Start in Lowe

2) The sunlight coming from the window and consequent shadows on the floor.

3) The sun, in the process of rising for the day casts a giant ray of light into the window and onto the desks as I wait for class to begin. Looking around I see how suddenly all of the desks shadows seem to take on this monster-like quality, stretching and distorting with the angle of the sunlight. A classmates foot taps and I see the shadow moving as it protrudes out of the desks shadow giving the desk an arm to fit its new monster persona.

Light Observation #7

1. Tuesday, March 11, 2014: 8 am

2. I woke up (rather late, unfortunately) and didn’t think it could be the time it was because it was rather dim outside.

3. I looked out the windows and just felt exhausted. Not because I hadn’t slept, but because the overcast heavy sky just felt sleepy. The clouds muted the world around them and everything felt heavy. It was almost unsettling, the claustrophobic feeling that came across me with this heavy, bright but not bright, dark but not dark feeling. It was strange – just not right. I kept waiting for the sun to shine through or something so that the world wouldn’t seem so shut off and desolate.

Light Observation #6

1) 3/6/14 – Cherry Lane, Hicksville NY – approx. 11:00 PM

2)Street lights in a row along the road.

3) An infinite string of amber bulb after amber bulb stretched out before me. It was impossible to see anything else, beyond the feeble illumination my headlights offered. The road seemed to have no end, suggesting instead that if one were to try to reach the end of the street, his legs would be weak and battered before he made any progress.

Light Observation – Max Cerci

1) 3/7/14 10:00pm Outside Netherlands

2) A Street lamp outside of the Netherlands complex.

3) The melting snow created a mirror on the sidewalk as the light from the lamp casts one lonely ray into the water. All I could think about while I looked at this light was an overwhelming sense of loneliness and sadness. The light was a subdued amber and looked tired and devoid of any energy. It almost felt as if the light had lost its sense of purpose.

Max Cerci – Light Observation

1) 2/26/14 After the Symposium in the Playhouse Lobby.

2) The afternoon sun in the courtyard.

3) Walking out of the Playhouse theater and into the lobby a bunch of my friends and I didn’t waste time putting our jackets on as I began to say “It looks beautiful outside!” The second we opened the door a huge gust of freezing cold win hit with ferocity. Several different people began complaining “The light made it look so nice and warm outside!!” I found it interesting how the warmth of the sunlight in the courtyard and reflecting off the pavement immediately convinced us that it was springlike conditions outside even though we had all just been outside about 45 min. ago. This made me think about how easily light can fool our mind with the different psychological effects it has.

Lighting Observation #5

1.  2/27/14 7:10pm, Hofstra quad

2. Lights from Bits and Bytes on the left and dark, moonlit, quad on the right.

3.  On the left is Bits and Bytes that is lit from the inside.  Inside you can see colors, reds, brown, yellows.  Because it is the brightest light source around my eyes are drawn to it.  However, when looking to the right it is a completely different story.  The light from Bits and Bytes and the moonlight can only illuminate so much.  Everything is visible on the quad but there is no color.  There is a heavy contrast with the colorful Bits and Bytes on the left and the dark colorless quad on the right.
