Lighting Observation 5/3

4/28/24 – 1:46 PM – Playhouse Dressing Room

Objective Description: The lights around the mirrors are warm and light up the whole room without the overhead light.

Subjective Description: Moments before the last show of the run, the dressing room is unchanged despite the increasing nervousness as the start of the show gets closer. The warm ambiance provided by the lights around the mirror exudes a calming atmosphere, much more welcoming than when the harsh overhead light is on.

Photo Theme: Summer

I chose this photo because summer is about long days and appreciating the outdoors. This photo reminds me of summer’s nostalgia and brings back memories of beach days and watching the sunset. I love the warm sky colors and how the sun shines through the breaking waves.

Photo Observation 4/18

Theme: Surreal

I chose this photo as surreal because it is unnatural lighting. The color combination is unusual, and putting myself in the model’s position in the image, staring directly into a light source can induce a feeling of surrealism.

For the angle/color diagram, there appears to be a front light containing an orange light with a green highlight, and a second orange spot from the upper left corner.

Deep Straw – full, front and upper left corner

Medium Blue Green – full, front

Medium Blue Green – 75, upper left corner

I used a soft focus on all four beams, 5-degree width on both Medium Blue Greens, and 14-degree width on both Deep Straws.

Light Observation 4/19

4/16/24 – 11:07 AM – Outside of Emily Lowe Hall

Objective Description: The shadow of the railing on the steps of the building is broken and wavy, even though the railing is a straight object.

Subjective Description: The railing stands all day with strength and never wavers. However, when its shadow was reflected on the stairs beneath it, I was deceived about its shape. If I didn’t know any better, I would have believed what I saw on the steps, but I remembered to look up and confirm that the railing was intact.

Lighting Observation 4/12

4/8/24 – 10:03 AM – 6th Avenue

Objective: The sun shines and reflects light on the buildings as we walk down the street toward Radio City Music Hall.

Subjective: The sun is not reluctant to tell us it is morning. Although the buildings scrape the sky and block the sun from direct view, we still experience the power of its rays against the sheen of the glass windows.

Advertisement Light Lab 4/11

For my lab recreation of this ad, I used the middle overhead light with a soft focus, one side light from stage left, and one front/side light from stage left. The sidelights were hung at the second level, and all lights were set to a 26-degree range. I am uncertain whether the advertisement uses two lights from the side or not, but I chose to use two because my subject was too dark compared to the ad otherwise.

Photo Theme: Bizarre

This is a photo I took a few years ago in the Axinn Library on one of the higher floors. I was attempting to take a picture of the sunset, but due to the bright interior vs. the dark exterior, the bookshelves were reflected onto the glass, blocking the landscape below. When you first look at it, it is hard to tell what you’re looking at. I kept this photo, although it is bizarre because I liked that it showed the two scenes in one picture.

Light Observation 3/8

3/4/24 – 6:45 PM – Calkins 139

Objective Description: The flourescent lights in the studio were very bright in comparison to the dark outside. Even though there was only half of them on, the room was completely lit up, and the white paint on the walls reflected into the room.

Subjective Description: The lights emitted a blinding light that made me have to squint, and my pupils kept dilating and constricting, making the room very white and uncomfortable. It was like a hospital with its unyielding brightness.

Photo Observation 2/22

This photo was taken on the island Inisheer, one of the Aran Islands located off the coast of Ireland. This was actually the first day of true Irish weather while I was there, so it was chilly and windy. I think this photo represents cold lighting well because the sky and the ocean have the same gray-ish blue color, and there’s no sun visible. The ocean doesn’t look very welcoming, but rather cold and choppy.

Lighting Observation

2/16/24 – 9:05 AM – My house

Objective Description: The sun shining in through the window hit the prisms on the chandelier, and reflected rainbows on the wall behind it.

Subjective Description: The morning sun, in all its glory, comes through the open blinds. Little does it know that all its colors would soon be revealed when it shines through the hanging glass.
