Light Observation 12

1) 4/25/13, 12:15 AM In front of the Emily Lowe quad

2) A pitch black sky. The moon shines through, a small blue ring of sky around it. It looks hazy and fuzzy, almost distorted.

3) Stepping off the unispan I looked up into the sky, wish I was back in Connecticut so I could see at least one star in the night sky. I just saw black. Complete darkness. It was kind of disheartening. I started walking toward Lowe and looked up again right by the quad. Just over the playhouse I saw a sliver of light, but it obstructed. I maneuvered around slightly until I could see it. The moon acting as the only thing in the sky. It wasn’t bright, or happy, or hopeful. It was just there. It was a dull moon, obscured slightly by something that gave it a hazy effect. There wasn’t much emotion to it at all. So why did it stick with me? Because I was expecting to have emotion from it, but didn’t. But then, does lack of emotion count as portraying a feeling? Can you influence someone into feeling nothing? Dull? Flat?

4) This is Cinderella’s Castle in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom at night in december a week from Christmas. My high school choir had the opportunity to sing at Epcot’s Candlelight Processional. We stayed for a week and went to the major Disney theme parks. Disney has always had a very intense emotional impact on me. As a child I fell in love with each and every character in the classic movies. I wished I could meet them and I always dreamed of going to Disney World to do so. When my school was contacted about this amazing chance I knew it was a trip I would remember for the rest of my life. At the time of this picture I was with a few of my closest friends. We went through 4 years of high school together and we were all excited for the fireworks display. We sat around the central area in front of the castle and just talked. Moments before it got too dark, we saw a very special moment happen in front of us: a marriage proposal. That set the tone for the rest of our night. The Castle lit up and we were awestruck. It was too beautiful for words. The lights changed to different color schemes and unique christmas displays for the season. We were laughing and having a great time. I didn’t want it to end. That week, and that night specifically, was one of the most pure moments of happiness I’ve ever had.

Light Observation 4

1) Friday 2/15/13 10:00 P.M. On the highway about to cross Throgs Neck Bridge.

2) Throgs Neck Bridge at night with its lights. From a distance I could easily see the individual with lights along the bridge’s arches. As I got closer I noticed a bright light blue reflection of the light on the water directly under the bride.

3) Everyone has two versions of themselves. One is the outside: This is the very first thing people see when they meet you. They make judgements based on this you and this is the you that the majority of people accept as “you.” This is who we want to present ourselves as and can be considered the “best” version of an individual. But it’s only a small part. It’s a shell of our real persona. Behind every smile on every face is a life. A person that has his own ideals and beliefs and experiences. What’s on the outside is just what we can see. Once someone lets you in, you really know them. They’ll give in to shyness and timidity to let you see they’re colorful underbelly. That’s when you truly know someone.

Light Observation 2.1

1) 2/8/12 – 9:40 PM – Fields at the corner of campus just past the fitness center

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It was a relatively clear sky with a few clouds scattered in sky. It was a full moon and it was casting shadows and lighting up the entire field and short but clear shadows.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Tuesday was a long day; after working against the clock all morning on the Much Ado set I sat through a pair of hour and a half long classes on pure lecture and was assigned double homework due for thursday. Spanish then followed and by the time 6:00 rolled around I was exhausted and  decided a quick walk would do me some good so that I could clear my head and enjoy some fresh oxygen to the brain (free of sawdust and steel shavings). I grabbed my IPod and left the grounds of the netherlands and headed north east to the fields just beyond the fitness center where I like to walk and enjoy the little grassy sanctuary in the middle of the modernized Long Island I was surrounded by. This spot was a little place that reminded me of home, untouched by buildings and simply serves to house the bunnies and offer a clear place for me to breathe and de-stress.

As I got closer to the fitness center I began to relax and let myself wander in my thoughts. I strolled on to the grass and began walking to the far field. At this point I was in a secluded from the bustle around me and was overtaken by my music and the calmness of the cool air. I began to notice the clarity of the air and the full moon shining above me very high in the sky.

I started looking down the ground and noticed how each blade of grass seemed somewhat shiny in the cool light and each blade cast its own faint shadow just beneath it. Even though the darkness of the grass reflected very low intensities the dark shadows hashed into the deep green created a mess of crooked lines into the ground. As I wandered through the grass noticing the faint resemblance of the bunnies I sat down on the bleachers and looked up. The sky was glowing in a dark blue and only the brightest objects in the sky were visible, Venus, Mars and two other stars. There were three wispy clouds directly above me. The  light from the moon made the edges glow white contrasting with rich blue background. I sat there and took a deep breathe and soaked in the air and the world around me. I looked at the moon and realized how for me it was looking in to the sun. I realized that with a life in the theater, seeing the sun would be a privilege on most days and that for as long as I was going to be in this field of study I was going to have to get used to the shadows and feeling of only the suns reflection.

Photo Observation

2) I took this photo last year while I was in Boston.

3) Theme: Nightlife

4) When I thought of nightlife I decided to go a little different than the party, neon lights scene.  I started to think about the people who work the night shift that kind of nightlife.  I really like this picture because of the lights in the skyscraper.  Not all of them are on which creates an interesting nightlife feel.  It makes me think that many people have gone home or are going home, like the cars rushing by at the bottom of the picture.  I really like that it emphasizes light that is present as well as light that is absent.  The other cool aspect of this picture is the street lamps.  When ever I see street lamps I automatically associate them with the night.  The low, yellowish glow of the streetlamps also give a night time feel.
