Photo Observation 3

  1. This was taken by German photographer Lucas Zimmermann in 2014 as part of a project on traffic lights.

  3. The long exposure of the colorful traffic lights lights up the night. I can imagine myself driving late at night after a rain storm and seeing the lights glow. It represents to me a feeling of freedom and adventure, which is what the nightlife is.

Party House Repetition with Primary Colors

  1. Location: House on Front Street, February 11, 2017 at 10:45 pm.
  2. Objective: A line of LED lights that illuminate red, then blue, and finally green, over and over. They are the only lights on, cascading the the small interior of the house party in the primary colors.
  3. Subjective: As the music and tight crowd was drowning me out, all I could see was the repeating colors of red, blue, and green. These repeating color changes, hurting my eyes with its repetition, made me think about all the times I had been at a party or one of the bars. I would go, arrive, drink, and then head home. Doing this same thing over and over again to find some connection or fulfillment. Sometimes I would, other times I would not. Yet staring into those primary lighting colors made me realize that I would do similar patterns for partying.

  3. I specifically remember the night life in Tel Aviv when I was there this summer. People often think of Israel as very old-fashioned and religious, but Tel Aviv is completely different. I chose this picture in particular because the city looks a lot like modern American cities at night, and it kind of reminds me of New York. It shows that Tel Aviv has a bustling nightlife and contrasts the ideas that many people have in their minds of what Israel is like.

DESCRIPTION: This is at Hollywood Studios at Disney World. Two years ago. This is a Christmas light display that wraps around the second half of the park. When you turn the color and see this display you have to stop in your tracks and take in everything. When people turn the corner, everyone stops in their tracks and takes in this beautiful site and just stand there in awe. This year was the last year they did the display and I am glad that this event had such a big impact on me.

Description: This is a photo taken inside a diner looking out into the night. The windows are foggy and illuminated with the reflections of neon signs. There are two bench seats shown, but both are empty. I think this picture illustrates how lonely the night time can be. The energetic and colorful signs are contrasted with the sad, empty black seats that are also paired with an empty table. The glow coming from outside is almost inviting you to come outside and be a part of the excitement, but instead you stay in an just look out, all alone. When I first saw this picture I thought it was bright and beautiful, but after analyzing it further, I realized that although it is still beautiful, it is also quite melancholy.

Photo Observation #2: College Student’s Night Light Night Life

12665830_968174453230565_1597499528_n

My roommate, the lovely Kayla Bickel, took this photo. She was excited after getting her new camera and was testing it out by photographing things in the room last week.

This photo was taken at night in my dorm room, and it is the lighting that best represents my own night life.

The little fireflies of color in the room guide me into sleep most nights. They shine with life in the dark right before I close my eyes. They are calming and soothing. The soft small lights are anything but imposing. They do not blind or clash with their surroundings. Instead, they mesmerize and encourage forgetfulness of worldly cares. These little spread of rainbow lights on the wall can open one’s eyes to other worlds. They give comfort like a warm little candle in the cold dark night, and, with their bright glow contrasting against the surrounding dark, they gently whisper that those who see them are safe. They could instantly be a child’s favorite night light for protection from the beasts of the darkness because of their pretty hues that are apt to bring smiles of delight. Thus, these orbs, these gems, that hang in the room at night are easily declared this college student’s night light, a vital part of my night life. In addition, the lights, themselves, only breathe and sing their soothing songs of color at night and could be considered to have a night life.

Description: This is a photo of a busy city street at night. The light of the day has fades to the darkness of night, which is being illuminated by the warm orbs of street lights and bright store signs. The people on the street have yet to take notice to the change of time since the artificial light that surrounds their daily lives never stops glowing.

Theme: nightlife

Description: I picked this picture because it shows the dark ambiance of the night sky contrasted by the pulsating bright lights of the city and traffic.  Even though there are many sources of light and overall the picture is bright, you can tell the surrounding area is dark and all the light is artificial. I also like the reflection light on the road from the cars, the glow surrounding the buildings and the many shadows the fill the picture.

I set out to look for photos of New Orleans because I wanted a vibrant picture of nightlife– lights hanging, people crowded, bright colors– but I was really caught off-guard by this picture. I’ve never had taste responses to pictures of non-food before, but this picture did it. The warmer colors of the street lamps and their shine on the yellow-green leaves of the tree made me taste citrus; particularly orange. The bright blue-green colors reminded me of mint. These are two terrible flavors to mix– anyone who has had orange juice after brushing their teeth will know, but I think the contrast works in this picture to create a flow of colors, and the movement of the lights from the upper left-hand corner to the center right (the woman in the photo also lends to this movement with her posture) creates that journey from tangy and wild to refined. There are many more things to say about this picture (such as the silhouette of the fence and woman or the texture of the stones) but that was the most interesting encounter I had with this picture.
