Lighting Observation 1

1)   3/6/11- around 10 o’clock pm- walking from Lowe to the Library.

2)   The sky was an orange and yellow color.  It was cloudy and rainy and it was difficult to tell that it was actually cloudy.

3)   I was walking to print out photos and I glanced up at the sky.  It was then that I realized it was not the typical color I would expect.  I expected to look up and see black or grey because it was raining and it was nighttime.  Instead I looked up and saw this amazing orangeish yellow sky and it was so vivid.  It appeared to have no source but I figured that out to be the fact that the sky was cloudy.  It was a very interesting light because it reminded me of the sky in the picture Scream.  It had a warm feel to it, which I thought was very interesting because it was obviously raining and it was also cold.  The red, orange and yellow colors that were in it made it seem as though it was coming from the sun.  It was very similar to what a sunset would look like and it had many of the same qualities in terms of brightness, color and feel.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 3)

Wednesday February 16th, 11:00 Outside Lowe Hall (cigarette pit)

2) The light is very orange. It is relatively dim. There is a dark shadow blocking out most of what is visible, and some light spilling on to the side of the building from a window right outside. The light from the window is bright white. There is very little visibility.

3) The light is foreboding and creepy. The orange seems other worldy, and the butts of cigarettes scattered on the dirt are only illuminated enough that they can be seen and not distinguished. The light spilling out the open window is cut off by the dark shadow cast by the railing and by the side of the ramp. It looks like jumping down, even though it is a small drop, would be very unpleasant.

Lighting Observation #2

1) Thursday Feb. 3rd 2011, 6:58 P.M.

2) The artificial street lamps lighting the NAB.

3) Approaching the NAB for rehearsal, I saw how the orange-yellow glow of the street lamps played off the shiny surface of the building and contrasted with the bright white fluorescent light coming from inside. It felt clinical in a way, but warm. Something about it fostered introspection. It made the bright light in the door, generally something positive and promising, look unwelcoming.
