Lighting Observation: Week 3, Observation 2

Where: Wednesday night, in front of Lowe.

Objective Description: There are two trees in the quad – they are somehow dimly lit by a source not visible to me off to my left. The light hits them from underneath.

Subjective Description: I’m a little fascinated. I’ve never seen trees lit this way before. Something about the image reminds me of fire – perhaps because the weakness of the light and the shadows of branches create the illusion of fast, flickering movement.

Lighting observation: week 3, observation 1

Where: Monday, late afternoon, in front of Alliance hall.

Objective Description: It’s a lightly clouded day, and the sun is in the west – it manages to get through small breaks in the cloud.

Subjective Description: It looks like something out of a painting. I didn’t think something so picturesque actually occurred in real life. It had a holy or heroic feel – it was reminiscent of paintings or films where a single beam of sunlight breaks through the clouds onto a saint or hero.

Photo Observation 3

2) This photo was taken by me during the summer while I was at Disneyland in California,  the picture itself is from their new fountain show, World of Color.

3) Vibrant, Colorful, Saturated

4)  I picked this picture because when I think of color and vibrance, I think of this show.  I really like the use of the whole entire rainbow and how everything is lit up.  I think the blend of colors in this picture speaks vibrant and colorful.  The other thing I like about this picture is that it not only has the basic colors of the rainbow but all the colors in between too.  I think the glow of the fountains in this picture contributes to the vibrant aspect of it too.  Having all that color against a black sky also helps emphasize that color and bring out the contrast more , especially in this photo.

Lighting Observation 2 (Week 3)

1) 2/16/11- about 11:40 p.m.- In the car on the way to the rink

2) A series of street lights lined up

3)  I observed the many street lights on Hempstead Turnpike and I noticed that they all lined up very nicely and made a perfect picture in perspective.  The lights got gradually shorter, the farther they were away and also dimmer.  The lights also moved, as in grew taller and brighter as we moved in the car towards them.  The interesting thing I realized is that the lights are all yellow and it is a kind of yellow that does not speak caution or danger but is softer and sleepier.  I wonder why this type of light is used?  The other interesting thing is that when at the right angle I realized that the row of lights looked as though it never ended and I thought that was an interesting trick that the lights did.  I was really impressed and amazed at how light can show so much depth and really help you compare distances.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 3)

1) 2/12/11- around 8:30- Hockey Rink

2) Moon light shining through window into a completely dark rink.

3)  This lighting moment was one that caught me off guard because the way the light shined through the window was perfect and look as though it was done on purpose.  It felt cold and a little bit mysterious.  The light shined through a four pane, old window and it created long beams of light that looked similar to a spot light.  It was a bluish tint and the only light I could see.  The high angle of the light also gave it a strange look, as though it was looking down upon something and would have definitely cast long deep shadows that would conceal the features of an object.  It was a picture perfect light.
