COLD – Alice McKay

Theme: Cold

Date: February 13, 2022

Location: Narnia (Garden outside of Spiegel)

Description: While walking to Lowe one frigid afternoon I noticed this stunning landscape of sticking snow. The freshly fallen white snow creates the perfect palette for the cool blues and browns to bounce off of. Aside from the obvious “cold” of snow while looking for an image I noticed the absence of warm tones where copper and yellow leaves once took place. The energy created in this image is the perfect depiction of cold.

Photo Observation

  1. ATTRIBUTES: Google Images (photographer not listed)
  2. THEME: Cold
  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo both because despite being a tropical setting where the inherent perception is warm, the deep, cool, blue colors create a cold atmosphere. The lack of sunlight (or any artificial light) has turned the pool an even darker blue than the ocean and all of the foliage is only visible in silhouette. It almost seems to elude to a possible storm approaching. There is movement in the leaves and in the ocean, but the setting as a whole, appears to be deserted which reinforces the idea of a chilly atmosphere.

Cold

ATTRIBUTES : This photo was taken by Roger Ball.

THEME : Cold

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo because of the color palette. The majority of cold tones creates a feeling of chill, yet there are still some warm tones present to make the impact of the cool tones even more impactful by the contrast.  However, even with this contrast, I enjoy how the colors are not too vibrant. There is a dullness to them that creates an almost numb feeling that I associate with the cold. Furthermore, the mist in the photo creates the feeling of isolation and expansiveness. When I think of the feeling of cold, I think of being alone. The fog enhances this sensation by tapping into the feeling of the unknown.

Cold

I choose this photo because to me the empty void where water once rushed through is now completely dry and frozen.

Love

Theme: Love

Description: I think that love is too often associated with romance. I think of that bubbly feeling of joy that comes with any good relationship, especially friendships is love. I think the warmth in the sky perfectly captures this feeling.

Light Observation #1

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/23/22 2:45pm RSR booth

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Very bright light from the sun casting through the windows and in between the cracks in the blinds.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It had barely been an hour of work and it was so hot. The fan was not working and the heat would not give up. The sun was piercing through the window and made me feel like I was under a magnifying glass. It felt like the tiny little room I was in was about to start boiling or combust all at once. The shapes the sun made on the desk as it crept through the blinds reminded me of shards of glass.

Photo Observation #1

Photo Attributes: Yvonne HC

Theme: Cold

Description: I chose this photo because of the gray overcast, the cooler/darker tones in the buildings and structures outside the window, and the rain. I like how there’s a focus on the raindrops on the window but you can still vaguely see the rest of image. The small raindrops compared to the big buildings were also something that stood out to me. The overall dark and gloomy appearance of photo makes it feel cold to me. Although this image isn’t innately cold I feel that it provides a cold atmosphere.

Cold

Google Images-Central park-Cold

I chose this photo from Central Park because of the lamp post. The lamppost shows warmth against all of the cool tones. This juxtaposition shows just how cold the picture truly is. Without the illuminating orange post, it doesn’t seem as cold but because the post is there, it emphasizes the difference in the lighting. White and blue and even the cool-toned brown of the bridge and trees swarm around the orange light trying to envelop it but the warms shines through the harsh cold.

Photo Observation – Cold

  1. ATTRIBUTES: Photographer: Juller Many
  2. THEME: Cold
  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo both because of the cool tones within it and also the “cold” atmosphere the lighting provides. I initially was drawn to the cool tones of it, and thought about how the photo isn’t innately “cold” or of something cold. However, because of the fog, the lights in the background are blurred and create an uninviting “cold” aura. The dark haze causes feelings of trepidation and unease.

  1. DATE: 02/20/22
  2. TIME: 12:00 am
  3. LOCATION: Bill of Rights 12th Floor Main lounge
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:  I picked the main lounge of Bill of Rights because it is actually very interesting to look at. I had never noticed how much I love to not have the full light of dorm on but just the night stand one. I have been really connected to how lighting created mood and intention and maybe it has to do with the fact that I am always thinking about how I would like the audience whenever I create a piece to feel. I have found that lighting does more than just make look something good but also there is so much more behind it.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Dark environment with a dim light is so beautiful to watch. I was thinking about how this type of light makes me feel and I concluded that I feel cozy, warm, and calm. What I did was that I brought a friend with me and just watched how she looked with this type of lighting and there were parts of her fact depending on the angle that I could not really see. The shadow created was really nice to see and what was more interesting was the cozy feeling that all of that scene of light created.
