Drama 16 Stage Lighting

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

Sunset in Vermont is very colorful, I use yellow, orange, pink, and purple to represent sunset. And blue in cyc as sky. Light comes from one side because it’s sunset. And because it’s in fall, there’s also some red color like maple leaf.

2) Spring sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

I use a window gobo to represent the subject is in a Gothic Cathedral. Because it is sunrise, so light comes from one side, and the color of sunrise is very yellow, but not orange. For cyc, I use light blue as the sky in spring, very blue and clear.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in Hawaii

In Hawaii, when it is the noon on a hot summer day, sun shines directly above the subject, so I use one source of light on the top of the subject. The shadow is under it, and there’s no shadows on the side. And it is noon, so the sun shines will not be too yellow or orange, it is almost white. Top cyc is blue as sky, and bottom is blue with a little green as sea.

4) Winter afternoon in North Dakota

In winter, it is all covered with snow, so it looks cold. I mainly use blue and white to represent the feeling. For the top light, it is a little yellow because it is sun shine. And for bottom cyc, I use white light to represent snow. And there is different blue to make it more fit the real color.

Fall Sunset in Vermont

Instruments: For the first and second moving light I used the gel R15. Additionally I used the gel R26 for the third and fourth moving light. Finally I used the gel R68 for the top Cyc lights. Across the bottom row, I used the gels R15, R21, R58, and R68.

Justification: While researching I was particularly drawn to the crimson autumn trees in combination with a warm sunset. Because of this I chose to have the sun setting upstage stage right with a warm yellow and a combination of blues and purples for the sunset. Additionally the moving lights on the proscenium act as red washes, acting as the trees near the subject.

Spring Sunrise in Gothic Cathedral

Instruments: For the top Cyc lights I used gel R069. For the bottom Cyc lights I used gels R15 and R68. For the single moving instrument I used the gel R15.

Justification: I chose to light this spring sunrise with light blues and a warm yellow to demonstrate a crisp morning. The blues lend to the breeziness as the sun rises and begins to warm the Earth.

Noon on a Hot Summer Day in Hawaii

Instruments: I used gel R68 for the top Cyc lights and R069 for the bottom Cyc lights. In each corner of the grid I used no gel on the moving lights.

Justification: When researching noon in Hawaii, it was apparent that the notable features of the lighting included the vibrant sky and the bright wash over the entire area. Because of this, I direct four instruments toward the subject providing a general wash of light and included the blue Cyc to represent the beautifully blue sky.

Winter Afternoon in North Dakota

Instruments: I alternated using gel R80 and R201 on both the top and bottom Cyc lights. In each of the top four corners of the grid I used the gel R201 on the moving lights. The fifth and sixth light use the breakup gobo and gel 201 on the moving lights.

Justification: I used blue and grey on the Cyc to mimic a dark sky clouded with snowy weather. Additionally I used grey gels and gobos shining on the subject to make it appear as if it is in a snow storm.

Fall

There are three moving lights on the subject, using gels R017, L141, and R15. The bottom of the cyc is lit with gel R020.

The most iconic and identifiable color of a sunset is orange; the same can be said for fall in New England with the changing of the leaves. Both sunset and fall signal the coming of darker times.

Winter

There are once again three moving lights on the subject. It is lit from SR with gel L201, SL with gel R68, and from the top with gel R51 and the breakup gobo. The cyc is lit with gel L201.

Winter is bright and white, but there is texture in the snow and North Dakota gets a lot of snow.

Spring

There are three moving lights on the subject, all SL, with gels L192, L328, and the third with gel R51 and a window gobo.

Sunrises and spring have a pink tint to them. Gothic Cathedrals have very prominent windows, through which a sunrise would be beautiful.

Summer

The subject is lit from the front using moving lights with gel L201 and from the top with a moving light with gel R002. The cyc is lit with gel R077 from the bottom and R082 from the top.

During part of the year, shadows seem to completely disappear around noon in places like Hawaii because the sun is directly above the objects.

Fall sunset in Vermont

Description: For the moving light I used gel R009, and for the cyc lights I used gel R052.

Justification: Fall weddings are popular, especially when the air is crisp, nature is in full swing with all the pretty colors, and Vermont is a natural spot for a wedding venue since it offers the perfect amount of natural beauty.

Spring Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

Description: For the moving lights and the middle cyc lights the gel is R051, and the left and right cyc lights are gel R095.

Justification: While Italy is not the birthplace of gothic architecture, there are lots of hints of it throughout the country. The sunrises are incredibly beautiful, and there are lots of natural photos taken while in the country.

Noon in Hawaii on a hot day.

Description: The moving light and top and bottom cycs are gel G888 with no gobo.

Justification: Noon in Hawaii gets incredibly hot, so people tend to go to the beach in order to cool off and to spend time with friends/family.

A winter afternoon in North Dakota

Description: The moving light and the top cyc lights (4 and 7-9), and bottom cyc lights at 75% are gel E174. The top blue cyc lights are a combination 10.815% red, 33.968% green, and 100% blue.

Justification: The sun is starting to set above the church, and as the last person leaves they get a photo of the scenery.

Time: Around 10AM
Place: Student center

Objective: Sunlight shining through someone’s stained glass earrings spreading multiple colors on the table I was at.

Subjective: All the colors remind me of a crystal shop. All the distorted sun rays shining through translucent crystals, calming people down. A very nice feeling, then when you move around and the colors shift you can get more excited again.

Time: 1:00 am

Location: driving home from the 7/11 near my house

Objective: It’s dark outside but not as dark as I expected. More like dark grey, where you can still see movement in the sky. The only light guiding me while driving, other than my car lights, are the low streetlights. There was also a lot of fog at that time of night, enough to make me take precaution with driving slower than usual.

Subjective: All the fog and low lighting in a dark setting reminded me of many horror scenes. The fog intensifies any sense of fear because it inhibits your line of vision. It adds on to the idea of uncertainty and the unknown.

Objective: a sunset through the blinds on the window to my dorm room

Subjective: I could barely see the sun and the sky was still mostly blue, but I was in a call with my friend who was describing his view of the sunset, making my own feel prettier than it was

Location: Fyhre Hibachi

Objective observation: There’s a lot of natural light coming in through the big front windows, and there are magenta LED strip lights at interval along the wall.

Subjective observation: The magenta lights on the wall give an element of whimsy to an otherwise fairly nice, straight-laced restaurant. They’re charming, but still classy, and the natural light through the windows is refreshing.

C-Square Dorm

Pictures on the walls reflected the light coming in from the window.

The light shining on some of the wall made several of the pictures glow with purity. This simple white light felt to be a tiny representation of a heavens gate. Because the light was only reflecting off some of the pictures, it seemed that the light was choosing which pictures it shined on. Furthering the feeling of heaven shining down on earth.

Theme: Surreal

Description: I focused on the idea of how surreal appears very dreamlike. This image does maintain components of reality with the warm light hitting the person from the back, but the blue-green light is an uncommon and relatively unnatural color. The blue-green light coming from the window on the side creates that unrealistic, other worldly illusion. Also the haziness of the light provides the blurriness and lack of accuracy that is associated with dreams.
