Lighting Observation 3/29

3/28, 10:30 pm, my living room

Objective description: The overhead lights are off, and the side lamp  casts a soft yellow light on the room. The candle on the table is lit and flickers back and forth. There are string lights along the wall above the TV, and they are set to the color pink.

Subjective description: The living room feels extra cozy with the overhead light off and lots of small side lights. The candle and pink string lights bring a warm energy to the room, and I feel a little sleepy with all of the lights being so dim.

Theme: Single source of artificial light

This photo was taken in the dark, illuminating the person’s appearance slightly, showing their profile. The white light is behind the person outlining the facial features, giving a divine, etherial look.

Description: This pictures shows a metal ballerina statue under a cool white spotlight. The artificial top light helps emphasize the angles and lines of the ballerina’s figure, and it creates a stark contrast between the light and the statue. Since there is only one light source, the photo is somewhat two-dimensional.

Light Observation 3/29

3/28 – 10:45 AM – Lowe 110

Objective Description: The cloudy day made the sunlight very even, and each window glowed with a light of the same intensity.

Subjective Description: Though the day was wrought in gloom, we were still reminded of the sun’s power. The clouds may have obscured our direct view of it, but its light still sprayed across the sky and lit up the studio, being our light source rather than the artificial lights in the ceiling.

Photo Observation

I found this photo of a girl online holding a light bulb at different angles, and how the angle effected the photo. This photo was a clear demonstration of how when a single source light is only coming from one side, it completely loses the other side of the girl’s face.
