Theme: Single source; artificial lighting

Description: This is a perfect example of single source artificial light. The boy in the photo is slightly turned while a single light from below  is illuminating his face. Since the light is coming from below sharp shadows are created underneath his eyes and around his nose and mouth. These shadows make it appear as if he was telling a ghost story to his friends in the dark and holding a flash light below his face to add to the overall experience. The shadows on his face and the darkness that consumes the background also make it appear as if he is hiding or in an unsafe space.

4) The street light produces a very prominent and bright area of light on the brick wall. The intense darkness that encompasses the light source uncovers and exposes the brick, establishing and emphasizing a mysterious energy in the image; no one knows where the wall ends or begins due to the concentration of the light source. Rather than choosing a spotlight on stage to demonstrate a single artificial source of light, it’s interesting to see the same effect that spotlights have on stage in daily life. This light draws so much attention to that small area of what could be a rather massive wall. This image captures the importance and prominence of a spotlight on stage and places it in real life, and as we know, “All the world’s a stage.”

4. The ray of a spotlight is the quintessence of a single artificial light source. This one majestic beam of light can tell many stories, setting he mood for any scene. As the dark surrounds the room, the bright and conical ray lights a specific area making that subject the focal point. It shines down white beams of light and casts a blue glow around the area. The simplicity of this light wouldn’t distract and audience. Its only purpose is to highlight who is under the spot. This simple white light  can turn an ordinary actor into the star of the show.

4. This lighting effect is done with a single light source from the ground. This picture really shows how much effect a single light can have on an image and on the mind. With just one light specifically placed, this went from what could’ve been a flat looking image of a handsome young man standing, to a menacing dark and frightening picture. The high contrast adds a lot of mystery, which makes you feel uncertain, making you wonder if this person who seems nice is really actually stable. If the lighting were placed from above, there would have been an entirely different feel to this image.
