Light Observation

April 27th, 1:11pm corner of Oak St. and Hempstead turnpike.

I’m driving in a rush to work, and the sky is a glacier blue like blue Gatorade, very saturated and bright. The sun is deepening the color and the brightness while also illuminating the heavy dark clouds in the distance. The color of the asphalt in the road seems to have lost saturation, it doesn’t even look black it almost looks like a grayish white.

Light Observation

April 16th, 6:07 pm, my desk.

The sun is setting below the top part of my windowsill and lighting up the dies of my face and the rest of my desk. It is now difficult to see my computer screen with the light bouncing off of the white screen. My plants are a brighter green and the dry soil is more visible. It feels like a warm cast has been thrown over the room.

Lighting Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: May 4th, 4:35 pm , Emily Lowe
  2. Objective Description: I was in musical theater class in Lowe 108 and we were performing our final projects. As my partner and I taught our short audition piece, I could feel the sunlight coming in from the windows hitting my back. It was not very bright out since the sun was setting.
  3. Subjective Description: While the lighting outside was dimming, the warmth illuminating from the windows indicated the onset of summer. The faint glow excited me for life after college to come soon, but also for the relaxation in the near months before entering “adulthood.”

Light Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: April 26th / 7:29 pm / John Cranford Adams Playhouse
  2. Objective Description: Currently, I am sitting in one of the downstairs dressing rooms of Hofstra’s large playhouse. There is one singular dim-lit rectangular light illuminating the entire room. In front of me sits a vanity mirror with two parallel sides of light bulbs emanating warm light.
  3. Subjective Description: The cool-tone of the ceiling light provides a nice contrast to the warm lighting from the vanity before me. Although I am usually one who disdains warm lighting indoors, I feel like this low-intensity lighting from the vanity is helping me to relax before traveling to the stage. The closet within the room doesn’t have a light, but again I feel that the low quantity of lights is helping me to focus only on what’s in front of me / what matters.

Light Observation

  1. Date/ Time / Location: April 20th , 3:45 pm , my living room
  2. Objective Description: It was the middle of the day and I had been feeling rather groggy since I woke up. Since I had some essays to write, I decided to go to the living room couch and play some movies as background noise. The lighting in this room is exceptional during midday because there are 4 different windows on opposing sides of the room, allowing sunlight to flow in from nearly every direction. At this point the sun was still shining quite bright in the sky which encouraged a warm glow to pour into the space.
  3. Subjective Description: After feeling sluggish, walking downstairs and seeing visible sunlight in the living room really opened up my eyes and motivated me to grind through some homework. The sunshine was not only awakening, but had a discernible homeliness to it. Even as I sat down and opened up my laptop, the warmth weather seemed to envelop me like a blanket. Now that the cold, gloomy weather is starting to pass, the vivid sunshine allows more energy to flow through the atmosphere of Hempstead.

Lighting Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: April 6th, 8:45 pm, LH Comm
  2. Objective Description: I was in LH Comm for a dance rehearsal on Wednesday night from 8 – 9:30 pm. Although the room has windows, the darkness from outside crept into the space and gave the room a dim mood. Moreover, the lights inside the room are not a bright white and did not add much of a contrast to the natural lighting from outside. Only half of the lights were turned on as well, so there were several shaded areas within the large studio.
  3. Subjective Description: The past two weeks, I have been on-and-off sick and genuinely did not want to go to that studio for rehearsal. Nonetheless, when I walked into the room, the dim-lit lighting and subtle moonlight emanating from the windows calmed my nerves. I noticed that the moonlight tends to effect me in a way that relaxes my body. At first I thought I associated darkness with sleepiness, but now I realize how I absorb energy from light. When I am in ballet class in the mornings I have much more vigor in my steps and prefer large thrashy movements due to the sunlight. However, in this moment I felt tranquil and ready to move through the dance with ease.

Light Observation

  1. DATE: 04/04/22
  2. TIME: 10:00 pm
  3. LOCATION: Hofstra University Bill of Rights
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was in my bed and because it has been winter for so long I totally forgot how it felt to wake up to a window full of brightness. I opened my eyes and the sun was bright, intense, and going directly to my window. The sky was pink, orange, and a little blue and I was able to see a little bit of the moon. I thought it was a very pretty landscape to watch specially when it is the early morning.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As the sun hit directly my window it was also going directly to my right eye. Even though it was bright, it made me feel warm and gave me a sense of hope. It made me feel ready for the day and wanting to wake up because it is so hard to wake up with a very cloudy and cold weather. It made me feel better overall.

Light Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: March 28th, 9:35 pm, My bedroom
  2. Objective Description: I just recently adopted a baby gecko and moved him into his tank in my bedroom. Part of his little set-up consists of a blue heating lamp that hangs above the grated top of his enclosure. Although the light is not very bright, it provides an efficient amount of light to the gecko as well as the plants / caves / wood inside. However, there are still several dark spots for him to hide.
  3. Subjective Description: I was sad at first that he preferred to be alone and hide under his plants, but when he does come out into visibility his colors look amazing under the light. He is mixed colors of bright yellow and white with black spots. However under the light his sunshine / happy colors appear more warped and pastel. It’s also strange how the lamp is utilized for heat but the blue color creates a colder facade for the little space. I also like that the light allows me to see him without so much intensity that he feels like he has no privacy. The log and cave provided are quite dark once he enters them.

  1. DATE: 03/29/22
  2. TIME: 8:00 pm
  3. LOCATION: Picture of Cave in El Salvador
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There is this beautiful beach back in my country called Playa “El Tunco” where we go with my family every year. I was looking at a picture of it and there is this cave that me and my siblings always go to and it was really nice to remember how the inside of the cave and being in the shade felt. From the angle that we were standing it seemed the light was coming from the front but it was actually coming from the left side.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Being in the shade brought a feeling of calmness and peace. I also thought that it made everything that was outside the shade even brighter. Because of the angle of where we were standing it made it seem that the light was coming from the front (in relation to where we were standing) but instead it was coming from the left side. When you are in a darker space and looking to a place with more light the contrast makes everything that is bright even brighter and same goes to the dark side of it.

Lighting Observation – #7

  1. March 28, 2022 11:50 pm
  2. my bedroom
  3. My amazon Alexa was sitting on my bookshelf, and in my otherwise dark room, the ring around the bottom stood out as it lit up. The glow of the white light cast a slight haze on the surrounding books, not enough to read their titles, but to notice some of the colors on their spine and make out the shape of letters.
