Lighting Observation – #10

  1. April 19, 2022, 7:42am
  2. My bedroom, from the perspective of sitting at my desk
  3. My black doc martens sat on the wooden floor. The floor, because of how old this house is, is spattered with the color history of the wall and scratch marks from the furniture of tenants past. From the window, light shines down onto my boots and they glow white against their black exterior. The light barely effects the matted wood flooring.

Lighting Observation

  1. Hofstra University (Oak St) Friday, April 1 6:59pm
  2. Objective Description: The traffic light is red. There is a row of white-yellow headlights facing me. The sky is covered by clouds that are grey, white, and light purple. The sun is behind me, setting. The trees lining the street are being lit from the side as the sun bounces off the dorm windows.
  3. Subjective Description: The overall image was somewhat compelling because the sky was objectively gloomy but as the tree leaves rustle in the low sunlight and the deep green and orange meld together next to an old brick building which almost looks golden with the late afternoon sun, the day itself seems to assume a warm summer evening even though we know that not to be true.

Lighting Observation #7

  1. DATE: 04/01/2022
  2. TIME: 7:25 AM
  3. LOCATION: 5th Floor of Constitution
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The hallway outside the elevator was being lit by the light of the sun shining in through the window of the common room. The light was a warm amber which reflected off of the white walls to create a warm glow throughout the hallway.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The warm light shining in to the hallway created a very comforting feeling as I was walking to the elevator. The otherwise plain white concrete walls where lit up with the yellow light from the sun, which made the otherwise very unwelcoming hallway seem like a safe and happy place. The blue carpet also seemed to look brighter and more inviting as it reflected the light from the sun as well.

Lighting Observation #7

Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, March 30 at 7:15 from the 12th floor lounge on Constitution

Objective Description: A pastel sunset over the city and the light it gives in my window

Subjective Description: Thy is alight with softer pink, fading into a warmer light blue. The surrounding clouds are a bit of a softer pastel orange color. The sun itself is a vibrant red, made brighter by the surrounding clouds which make it seem much bigger than it is. From my position in Constitution, the sun encompasses half the city in its rich, red orange glow. That same city is made a light pink/orange-tinted gray rather than deeper gray or black it is because of both the distance from my window and the light from the sun. As it reaches the window, it reflects slightly off the wall just beside it and fills my room with, yet again, a soft, pinkish glow. The room is covered in it. Where normally the inside of the room look a little bit drab and boring, now there’s a bit of an ethereal feel to the furnishings and the walls

Light Observation

  1. March 26, 2022 7:17 pm
  2. Arizona
  3. Sitting in a parked car adjusting take out boxes and noticed the bright blue from the radio lighting up the center console of the car. The digital clock is slightly less bright and a pale teal/green. In from of the car is the neon sign for a sushi restaurant and the moon is blocked by the roof of the car but is slighting above and ahead to brightly light the dashboard. The usually dark grey fabric is now a silver ish brown and the pattern is very clearly discernible.

Light Observation

  1. March 28, 2022 4:43 pm
  2. Parkway towards Long Island from Brooklyn
  3. The sun was still high in the sky, making the sky seem a deeper, brighter blue than usual this late in the afternoon. The warmth of the colors contradicts the temperature outside. The green street signs are reflecting a beam of white light back at me; bouncing off the car in front of me.

Lighting Observation – #6

  1. March 17, 8:20am
  2. Location: in my fridge
  3. Fridge lighting isn’t all that aesthetically pleasing to me. When I opened my fridge to grab some leftover food this morning, the harsh lighting was not super pleasant, especially compared to the window-lit kitchen. I appreciated the contrast between the two kinds of light after going into my fridge.

Lighting Observation #6

Date/Time/Location: March 17 at 12:15 am in my dorm

Objective Description: My desk lamp shining on my desk (particularly on a packaged Hot & Spicy bowl of ramen)

Subjective Description: The desk lamp shines on my ramen bowl specifically. There are other things it hits, of course–a few papers, my mask, a water bottle–but the Hot & Spicy ramen is particularly in focus. The light of the lamp is ever so slightly warmer than my ceiling light, so I much prefer it even though it is darker. The ambience it gives the room is very cozy and warm. A sort of softness the ceiling light is unable to provide. It feels like the kind of light you could curl up in a blanket with a loved one under and watch a really crappy tv show. But in this case, it seems more to be putting a strange amount of emphasis on my uneaten bowl of ramen than to be making my room super nice and cozy. It’s really bright on the packaging, drawing my attention further towards the bright, almost garish colors on the ramen rather than helping me relax into the warmth the lack of bright light provides the room

Lighting Observation #5

Date / Time / Location: March 11 at 10:50,  vaguely the horizon line

Objective Description: a lot of orange-tinted lights that sit right up next to the horizon line

Subjective Description: The orange lights sit right up next to the horizon line. They’re really the last things you can see before the world fades black in the night. Because of the distance, the lights seem to flicker and change, looking like tiny candles across the scene. They are regularly distanced across the view, so it’s likely they’re part of a parking lot or something, but the orange color is more comforting and warm than is typical

Lighting Observation – #5

  1. March 7, 8:45pm
  2. Location: Hempstead turnpike
  3. I was deriving home from work, just off the parkway and driving down Hempstead turnpike towards my house. I looked ahead of me and saw all of the upcoming traffic lights dotting the road ahead of me. Against the dark night, the bright red, yellow, and green popped. The further into the distance I looked, the dots were more fuzzy, and the ones closer to me very clear against the dark sky.
