Lighting Ob #11

1. Wednesday April 25th 6pm NAB in the scene shop

2. Sunlight outside seen through the shop door

3. This moment caught all of us working in the shop off guard. As we are running about with lights and set pieces, I walked  into the shop to get steps and the garage door was open letting the breeze in. I just glanced at the door registering that it was open but the bright clarity made me stop. The day had been bright but the clouds were rolling in and ready to burst at any time. The reason it was so bright was because it was sun showering. The rain drops were enhancing the sunlight to become mesmerizing. It was only a sliver but that brightness in the corner was just what was needed for a busy afternoon in a dark theater. Its been seen before and its simple and not that uncommon but that’s what made it so mystifying. The view from the garage door is by no means a pretty one, it looks at Weed hall and the houses before hitting the turnpike but suddenly there was a filter between that drudgery and myself. Its always nice to find those little crystals during a long hard day and this lighting moment provided that uplift.

Light Observation

Over spring break, my dad and I decided to go skiing. The only mountain still open was about three hours away, so he took a day off of work and we left super early in the morning so we could get there right when it opened and while it would be cold enough that the snow wouldn’t be slushy. It was about an hour after sunrise when we headed into the mountains.

We were driving through a valley, flat and bedded with tall, tan grasses and a few wildflowers basking in the warmth of the morning sun, when the road suddenly grew dark. Before us was a narrow path shrouded in darkness. The sunlight died where the mountains suddenly rose up out of the flat earth, their steep sides blocking out the sky itself as the road slipped unnoticed beneath their shadows. Every now and then a ray of light would hit the bare peaks above us, giving shape to the shadows, but the could not stretch its fingers far enough to reach us. It was as though these mountains were the last refuge of the night as it strove to withstand the assault of the coming day.

Lighting Moment #10

1. Sunday April 14th 6pm Somewhere around Farmingdale on Highway 27

2. The sunlight has been bright all day but rain clouds are starting to roll in. The edge of the clouds is illuminated as a bright bright yellow making a straight line in the sky between the gray clouds and otherwise blue, cloudless sky.

3.The day was one of the warmest all week and there was alot of traffic out on the roads, the hustle and bustle everywhere made sitting in the car for an hour treacherous. Highways here are all about the publicity so stores line these roads as far as the eye can see. As we reached the last few miles of the trip I sat up to the edge of my seat and as I looked out there was this angel like power coming from the sky. Not just the way I saw it as the edge of a massive cloud but the godly shine split the sky in half. The overall illumination of everything didn’t change but when you looked up its like another world. It was the definition of appreciate the little things.

3. Spring

4. The beginning of spring makes outside come alive, be it ready or not, especially where I come from thus the flowers coming out of the snow. Despite the subject of this photo, spring lighting always seems so bright cause its reflecting colors that our eyes have been missing since the fall. Everything is simply brighter, almost blinding. It can be warm and inviting as the flowers reach upwards craving the life giving sun.

Light Observation

It was Monday morning at around 7am and Abbie and I were walking back towards our dorms from the academic side of campus. It was that time of early morning when the sun’s rays hit the earth at a low angle, creating pronounced shadows.

We had just come out of the student center, and as we approached the random colorful cubes that sometimes provide a shield from the wind when waiting for the blue beetle, we saw a truly remarkable shadow. The shadow was shaped like the part of a tree where the first branch stretches out from the trunk. It matched perfectly the shape of the tree behind the cubes, yet was being cast by the bushes in front of it. The bushes seemed small and unimportant in comparison to the striking shadow and tree behind it. So the effect became one of the tree’s shadow being somehow projected in front of the tree on this cube, a physical impossibility, but a connection the human mind is ever so willing to perceive and accept.

Photo Observation

Photographer: Anglolo Manetti, National Geographic Photo Contest 2011

Theme: Single Light Source

This photo is a beautiful example of what a single, visible light source can do. The dust in the air of the canyon allows the beam of light to become visible as it streaks down from above. The dust is swirling in the light, creating a softness and mystical quality to the beam. It is as though some magic or higher power has sent the light, a living organism, down into the darkness.

Lighting Observations 3.2

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/11/12 – 11:53 – Just outside white “bubble” next to uslesspan on north campus.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was walking to the soccer field at around noon on saturday. The sun was breaking up the clouds and reflecting off the white bubble just off the unispan by the football field.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My cousin was playing lacrosse at over the weekend. She goes to UCONN and lives in Philadelphia, so I hardly ever get to see her. I was very bummed when I woke up to see that the weather was not very nice and that it was so cloudy and snowy on the one day that her and my aunt and uncle were in town. Despite the cold weather and cloudy haze I put on many coats and my boots and headed out the door to go and meet them. I was walking on the North side of campus on the elevated road above the white “bubble” at the edge of campus. I was briskly walking to meet them at the field with my Starbucks sloshing around in my cup.

As I turned the corner and walked parallel to the bubble I realized that it had finally stopped snowing and it actually wasn’t that cold out. I looked up and the sun was actually starting to burn through the clouds and shine onto the sidewalk. The sky had been very dark, gray and threatening all morning. this was the first variation and contrast I had seen in the sky all day. For about the next thirty seconds the clouds continued to thin and eventually part. The intensity of the sun increased dramatically and the light shining through went from a deep gray to a warm and intense golden white. The hole in the clouds had a skewed triangular shape and was still not a huge spot in the sky. All around the spot the sky remained dark and colorless. After another fifteen seconds or so there was another break just below the first. As I looked up there were now two brilliant spots in the sky surrounded completely on all sides with the darkness of the snowy clouds. As the two spots grew to their maximum intensity my eyes shifted their focus to the bubble. this pure white mass was catching all of the yellow light in the sky and casting a blanked of golden rays across the bubble. The white of the bubble reflected all of that golden light as it was the most intense and colorful source of illumination in the sky. I was thrilled that I was looking up to see this beautiful moment of the golden parts in the sky illuminating the bubble and creating a cold and warm color contrast with each other and then I realized that the weather was perfect and just as I arrived on the field, my cousin scored the second goal of the game.

Light Observation #1

1) January 30, 2012. 8:00 am. My dorm room

2) Sunlight shining through the window onto a stuffed animal in the morning.

3) Most dorm rooms aren’t the best places to find an inspiring light. The overhead light is fluorescent and harsh. I tend to like the natural light that shines through the window. Most of the time, the light is gray and sullen because it tends to be a dismal weather day. However, nothing could beat the natural sunlight that morning. The mix of orange and yellow radiating through the blinds was inspiring. I pictured the beginning scene from The Lion King when Simba was born and Rafiki holds him high on Pride Rock. The angelic light beaming through was gorgeous. I found it ironically funny to be thinking of The Lion King since the light was shown on a sheep, which if sheep lived in Africa, would be the lion’s prey.

Beja Photo Observation

What, Where: One of my friends old photo projects, friend against bed

Theme: Sad

Description: In this picture, the model is contemplating with a blank expression. For me what makes his mood is the lighting only covering one face with a one dimensional color off white. This gives the depressing feeling from the sunlight, witch is usually a positive with vibrant happiness.

Beja Light Observation:

Date, Time, Location: Wednesday March 2nd , 2011; 10:30AMish, at the NAB

Objective Description: morning sun shining through the wall of glass windows.

Subjective Description: as I was walking up the stairs to the second floor of the NAB, I suddenly got the feeling of warmth. I was actually feeling it due to the intensity of the morning sun, and feeling it through the bright shade of yellow. I also found the spaces in between the glass window shadow interesting, because it appeared to retile the floor with a skewed shape.
