Lighting Observation #11

1) April 16, 2013, 10:30pm, Roosevelt Field Mall parking lot

2) The light from the streetlamp in the parking lot was glaring on top of my car. There was a huge glare on top of the hood of the car.

3) As I walked out of the mall, I noticed a shadow of light gleaming from the streetlamp. Once I got closer to my car, the spot on the hood of my car got larger and larger. From a distance, my car had a shining look to it and was very noticeable in the parking lot because of the way the light from the streetlamp was shining on it. It was a welcoming feeling that I felt.

Light Observation 9

1) 3/4/13 6:35 Spiegel Theater

2) Most of the spiegel was in darkness, except for a row of lights lighting up a small strip on the stage.

3) I went to the spiegel to set up for Carrie rehearsal and was greated by darkness. I had never been in there when it was dark so it shocked me a bit. It was dark all around me except for a light on the stage. I didn’t know if anyone was in there and I called out. My heart was racing. I dropped my stuff and ran to the back to turn on all the lights. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the rest of the theater in light. I sat down after and thought how much it reminded me of a textbook cheezy-horror-movie situation.

Lighting Observation #7

1) 11:15am, March 9, 2013, Driving past Broadway Mall in Hicksville

2) As I was driving to the train station, I noticed a huge glare of light from the sun on top of the railroad tracks. The light was shining brightly which made part of the train station brighter and more noticeable.

3) When I was driving to the train station, the closer I got, the more noticeable the light was. When I saw the glare from the sun, I felt a feeling of confidence because I was heading to work. I did not feel tired and felt more aware and upbeat after seeing this light. I also noticed how the light shined on top of some cars and you could almost see for a split second, the ray of light shining from the sun to the cars.

THEME: Dealer’s Choice

I think I first came across this when perusing The Daily What (a la memebase), with a caption about the cool effects of long exposure photography and the emergence of light art – I didn’t really read it, I was just captivated by the pretty. Besides just how cool it looks and how much talent this must have taken, you can really get drawn in to the story being told. Maybe it’s a social commentary on our public school system, maybe youth in general. The asian script on the wall hangings could even be commenting a country in particular – or maybe it was just a perfect setting for someone to experiment with glow sticks. Either way, it’s an incredibly thought provoking image aided by the manipulation of light, color AND a camera, which I just find impressive.

Photo Observation #9 – Impractical Fashion

http://keetsa.com/blog/fashion/aurora-dress-comes-with-10k-led-lights/

This lighting is quite intriguing. The picture is a dress made of 10,000 LED lights and it was worn by an opera singer. The lights all work together and mix with one another to create to image of this dress. The colors all blend well into one another, from blue to yellow to green to pink. The bottom piece has no holes at all in the dress, it is one unified object of color. The LEDs on top have black around them as the LEDs are more spaced out. The dress itself fascinates me. There is a risk to where live circuitry around your body in the form of a dress. It surrounds the entire body with light. But who would wear such a dress? Maybe someone who is insecure, trying to keep the focus off their physical body, and on their artificial one. This purely artificial light cannot help but steal your attention. If someone where wearing a dress like this, I would feel the inclination to talk to them and introduce myself. Is this the way for new fashion? A blend of different LED colors, illuminating as one solid image? It does not seem practical to me at all. But when has fashion ever obeyed the laws of practicality?

Photo Observation #3 – You Didn’t Hear This From Me…

Photo by Derrick Tyson – http://www.flickr.com/photos/derricksphotos/189815067/

Theme: Shadow

Description:  We all seem to shelter secrets. Whether we do it out of embarrassment or pride, secrets exist to hide or repress certain memories. Some secrets can even make us go insane, eating at our insides until nothing is left. There is a secret pain in this picture. The man hides in the shadows, scared to face his secrets but bits of it fall out of the shadow into sight. Shadow has a useful ability of hiding the things that we don’t want seen by others. Shadow however, can be manipulated by light, just as secrets can be manipulated by truth. The man seems to be in pain, afraid of his secrets, maybe his past, coming out. He pulls his face down and into the shadow for a reason. I can feel inner agony, leaking off his face. The light is cast from the ground and casts a shadow created from his nose and hands over most of his face. We can make out his eyes, mouth, hands, and a portion of his nose. Not too much skin is shown, keeping his face and identity a mystery. He is hiding something. But what is it? Well, that’s a secret!

Photo Observation, Hypnotic

1)

2) This is from an exhibit in Denmark by Danish theorist and curator Lars Bang Larsen. A psychedelic light tunnel. Found on Copenhagen tourist site

http://copenhagen.unlike.net/event_occurrences/105376-Lars-Bang-Larsen-Psychedelic-Light-Shows

3)Hypnotic, spellbinding, trance inducing

4) This is a light tunnel where you can walk through and experience crazy colors and moving lights. Something like this is just really hypnotic, it pulls you in and just overloads your brain with crazy sensations. Moving lights and also sounds apparently make this tunnel a serious visual stimulus and it is almost an illusion of sorts.

Lighting Observation 1

1)Wednesday February 3rd, around 7PM, near Enterprise Hall

2)Looking at a lamppost with a white bulb about 4feet away through the branches of a bush with  water droplets hanging from the branches. The light is reflected in each of the droplets

3) As the white light from the lamppost passed through the bush, it was reflected in the hundreds of water droplets hanging from each of the branches, creating a scene that was like a starry sky. A slight wind stirred the bush making some drops fall and others shiver making the “stars” twinkle. Most of the lamps on campus are yellow lights but this one was white creating a purifying feeling. Not only was the light reflecting off the droplets, it was also filtering through the branches themselves adding a somewhat mysterious element, yet not ominous. The whole scene was soothing and reflective (literally and figuratively)
