Photo Observation- Spring

2) Attribute the Photo, tell us where it came from.

This is a photo I took of my dog last March (2020).

3) THEME: Spring

4) DESCRIPTION:

The sun has emerged to stay and its inhabitants soak in its spreading rays. The playful beings bound about in the bright green grass and sniff around in the fresh dirt and crisp air. The sweet smell of budding flowers and growing trees. Sun covers all and wraps its warmth across blue skies and bright colors.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/14/20 around 4:45pm in my front yard in West Hempstead, NY

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun was shining very brightly on my friend’s dog.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun beat down very heavily on my sidewalk where Appa sat, bathing in the sun. He had just eaten a dandelion and the yellow petals sat on his nose. The bright spring sun had painted his fur a radiant brownish-black and glossed over his eyes and made them shine.

Photo Observation

3) THEME: Spring

4) DESCRIPTION: I always think of spring as a beginning, so having natural light that floods in from the right reminds me of spring. Ands the light itself is very soft in the way it floods into the frame.

Photo Observation 5

Taken by me, March 2018
Single Light Source
The lighting is shaped into a box shape, with very distinctive edges, so that it is easy to discern where the light is hitting. It illuminates Roxie (my dog) in such a way that she appears both angelic in nature and like a beacon of hope. Due to the brightness of the light coming down, it creates a starker contrast between Roxie’s head and her surroundings, reminiscent of a sewer grate being removed over a dark area of the sewer system, only this is a much nicer vision (though the smell probably isn’t that different).

  2. Surreal
  3. This picture caught my attention because it is surreal to me that a women would be using a dog as perfume. Also the size of the dog also seems to be unusually small. I like how it looks like the spray coming out from the dog is a light source hitting her cheek. There is also light hitting her neck, shoulder, and knuckles but to me there seems to be an emphasis on her chin.

Single subject, single source

The front light put on the same plane as the dog in this photograph creates drama.  The focus on the dog in this lighting gives it a serious feeling, the dog seems to emerge out of the background as if pulled out of the darkness behind.  This portrait effect is developed through the placement of the light and the centering of focus on the dog.
